Hard Stroking ?

Remington 870s are not fine precision instruments and you have to cycle the actions firmly and swiftly for proper function.....'treat it like a rented mule' is one expresson I hear a lot. If you don't cycle them firmly you will get short strokes and even stovepipes. Actions on newer guns, epecially Expresses can be fairly stiff and require force.
I would assume that hard stroking would mean what Grouse Man is referring to.

Ok... it is as described then... the 3" hulls might not clear/feed properly unless you "Hard Stroke" it :)

Even with 2 3/4" if you are "light & slow" on the stroking you will sometimes get hulls that don't clear.

I've used that shotgun you are talking about before. It is a very nice gun, and despite its small size it was relatively soft shooting (softer than my Fabarm Martial ProForces). However, when using 3” ammo it tended to stovepipe if not forcibly cycled (hard stroked).
