How hard has this winter been for your local big game, esp for those of you out west?
I read of deer laying dead in the ditches last year, just wondering what the winter kill is like this year.

Haven't personally heard of it being that bad, Its been cold, but, there are still plenty of geese around here, and they havent been affected too badly it seems. The rivers aren't all frozen over yet. Calgary, by the way.

In northern Alberta we have had a lot of snow!!! We already have too many wolves, so I am sure they had a good winter hunting with this snow.

I expect moose numbers to be done

winter

Here in the central Alberta farm land the deer seem to be doing OK. seeing lots of last springs fawns so the dame coyotes are not getting them all, I however have got a # of coyotes. Some nice bucks made it through fall & are rebuilding body mass at the grain bins & piles around. Always like to watch the deer nomatter where. :)

There is not a heck of alot of snow here this year, yet. But the persistent cold and the freezing rain we had last weekend is probably stressing the animals somewhat.

In south/central BC we have a lot of snow. Probably the most snow in maybe twenty years and it will be very hard on the game. The snow came early and built up fast. I think there is an over population of wolves all over BC. Deep, soft snow, can make it tough for them, also. But they will still do OK for themselves, and have a hayday if it thaws for a while, then freezes. The wolves will run on top and the moose, elk and deer, already in poor condition by that time, will have a very tough time. There never seem to be thin wolves in the wild and I will bet you won't see a thin cougar, either!

geographical center of BC - deep snow but not quite as bad as last year. temps have been overall decent, a few cold periods but not too harsh

This winter has been the longest snow fall and the most snow here in years, although it hasn't been as cold as most years.
