Anyone doing it this fall? I've got a box of lazer cast silver Alloy in 405 gr to try in my 45/70. The meplate is huge. If they group well they'll be loaded for bear
Any experience with them on bone?
Why are you aiming for bone? Put one through the lungs and let him run... he won't get far... there will be a good blood trail and very little wasted meat... your hardcast will do a dandy job... I load 405 HC in my .45/70's... over H4198.
I don't know much (anything) about casting but I got some lead casted bullets that I got for my muzzleloader that go in sabots . I expect them to work fine. Why I want to shoot a bear with a muzzleloader is beyond me , but it's interesting sport

With a Brinell hardness of 20 or more, and one of those heavy , wide-meplat lead bullets, your shot from a .45-70 will go from "Arsehole to appetite" on any bear that walks this continent.
This spring I shot a black bear with an old 38-55 loaded with a Ranchdog design 250 grain cast bullet molded from wheel weights. It had a devastating effect and dropped the bear in its tracks. The Ranchdog has an extremely flat metplat (nose). You will be fine with your 45-70.
Just remember they almost wiped out the buffalo with cast bullets.
I've used cast lead slugs in 12 ga before just never used these silver Alloy bullets from Oregon trail.
Hoyt I usually wait for a broadside shot and aim for the off side leg. May loose a little meat but they usually never go anywhere. My finger nail bends before they scratch so I'm assuming they're very hard. I was wondering about this bullet being too hard and brittle
Reviews are all positive and I figure I'll load to around 1700 fps muzzle velocity
I've use hard cast 300 grain bullets in my Winchester 94 Trapper .45 Colt for a long time now. I've only shot one bear with it and I didn't hit major bone but it put the bear down very fast. As for penetration, the bullet exited the bear and hit a piece of oak firewood in a woodpile. In spring with that row (and a few more missing) I found the bullet on the ground. It weighed 280 grains and had expanded by 0.010"
Took a mule doe last fall with a 405gr OMA hard cast .45/70 over a almost full case of trail boss at 35-40yards, even at warm pistol velocity (1100ish fps) it passed thru the middle of her heart and made a clean exit... Internal damage was very minimal but a .45 cal hole clean thru sure makes em leak.
