For all you m14 experts

hey just picked up a barely used loaded m1a. what a awesome rifle. super accurate,with handloads or ball,i just love it.

anyhow my question is which parts are the most likely to fail/break on the m1a platform?

just so next order i make for something i can maybe order a back up piece so i dont have to pay for shipping when or if it breaks or so my rifle aint laying in the hospital.

thanx

I've been thinking about getting spare for an oh #### kit too , #### do happen and I hate waiting for parts.

A bolt kit would be a good start, I have experienced a spontaneous bolt dis-assembly with a previous M14, not funny.

Hammer and sear, op rod...

What might happen is that I will buy another M14, strip it and sell the barreled receiver.

If you have an older M1A it might be a good idea to check the Wikipedia entry for the M1A to determine what the origin of its components are. For example some receivers are out of spec and will not correctly handle some commercial scope mounts. Another good source of information is to go to the http://www.m14.ca/ site and then access M14 reference section. The M14 Rifle History and Development by Lee Emerson is a wealth of information and lists any issues with M1A`s which may also determine what components if any that you want to replace

Hardest hit part on an m1a? Probably whatever the hammer hits, get it? hyuk

The U. S. Army did a lot of field testing of the M14 in the 1960s. Based on that testing, the parts most likely to fail will be the bolt guts (firing pin, extractor and spring, and ejector and spring). In this testing, the M14 would fail to properly function about once every 3000 rounds and it would have a parts failure about once every 6000 rounds.

I hope they trained the riflemen how to do bolt takedowns in the field, because I find that to be the m14's biggest point of failure

Trigger pins, hammer pins ,bolt guts: mostly extractors and ejectors, elevation pinions, a hammer, op rod spring and a trigger are on my list of spares.
Garand can be substituted for some of the items ,except for the ejector and spring and the op rod spring.

nope, you just returned the rifle to the qm,after doing your i/as and they "took care" of it- and would just dump in a WHOLE NEW BOLT- you can do that with usgi m14s afaik- it's when you try that with chinese receivers that the tolerances aren't close enough
you also had the rifle replaced over various periods of time- ie the one you enlisted with wasn't the one you de-mobbed with

There are various lists for your 'Oh $hit!' kit. A good place to start would be where Uncle Sam started. Non sponsor (and really uncooperative guy) Fred at http://www.fredsm14stocks.com/faqs.asp posts a list:

First line (bare bones minimum):
* extractor
* extractor spring
* ejector & spring
* firing pin
* hammer
* hammer spring housing
* hammer & trigger pins
* trigger & sear
* bolt roller & retainer
* front sight screw
* flash suppressor nut
* flash suppressor set screw
* gas piston
* spindle valve spring
* spindle valve pin
* spindle valve
* connector lock
* connector lock pin
* op rod spring

Fred's own ABSOLUTE MINIMUM
* Op Rod Spring
* firing pin,
* extractor,
* extr. spring, and
* ejector/spring

thanx maple leaf,good answer.

Hey, you are in Dead Rear, AB... . I'm in Cgy doing a few M14 clinics in July. Right now the 07 Jul clinic is full, but I got spaces in 21 and 22 July.

Here's your chance to learn all about the "Oh shzt kit" and examine my tools (that does not sound right.... :cool: ) :eek:
and M14 parts in the "oh shzt kit"

Cheers,
Barney
