Has anyone done a test on M14s receivers,bolts and barrels to see what the hardness measures are on the Rockwell C scale? I know that when Century Arms was assembling guns these parts were in the Springfield Armory M1a range. All of the usa information deals with pre-clinton era guns and not the canadian imported guns. I haven't had any problems with my M14s rifles, which have shot many thousands of norinco and czech 308 shells. All I ever did was replace the op rod spring to us gi and put it in us issue stock.

Well i purchased a n14 a few month back and well iv had nothing but problems with it. But I DO work in a machine shop. and so i took in my bolt for Sh@TS! and giggles. and it rang the bell at a wopping 46 C Rockwell.
Also im not sure if anyone else had this but my opp rod comes out while shoting and james when i take the mag ot it pops through and you can see it in the mag well. i have corrected this by counter sinking and tapping the reciever to use a stainless steel machine screw turned down to match the diamiter of the little slid latch. no problem have occured since.

Did you buy a new/used norc m14 in a norc stock or a used one in a usgi stock?
was there a pin in the hole you Csunked and tapped? There should have been and it is retained with a small pin that protrudes out the bottom of the receiver corresponding with the slot that is in line with the hole you tapped. This pin is the connector lock pin and can "walk out" and allow what you describe above to happen. In a usgi receiver this pin is 1/8"inch(approx) longer than a norc so when a norc m14 is placed in an unmodified usgi type stock....... the pin walks out and releases the oprod spring guide into the magwell area farther than it's normal protrusion.
I don't see why your fix is not an o.k. solution but for anyone else having this issue..... p.m. me i have zillions of connector lock pins to replace a lost one. They are also easily made out of drill rod.
I took mine in a few years ago and had it tested. I don't have the numbers now but the receiver, bolt, barrel and op rod were fine, testing in the low to mid 40's RC.
The main problem I had while testing was that I had no dedicated fixtures for supporting the individual parts. The results were not 100% accurate but I will stress that nothing was soft.
The company policy forbids any firearms on the property so my testing was covert with the help of an interested inspector. It may not be such a good idea if a machinist loses their job by doing this.
