Could it be perhaps that back in the day the general public knew the ins and outs of firearms and to always respect them?.

Most people were likely smart enough not to shoot others or themselves with projectiles regardless of the "harmless" concept.

Now days im sure some idiots would shoot themselves in the head if their friends told them to.
