harrington & richardson NEF

I have a Sportster in 22lr, I'm lucky, the trigger is good, crisp. I put skinner peep sight and a new ramp and front sight, I love it, one of my favorites, but the sights cost as much as the rifle.

I want a .22 lr in one i saw one not long ago but the seller wich is a sponsor on wanted a photocopy of my pal and drivers license. So the only one i have is a 500 S&W mag.

I picked up my H&R Handi-Rifle in .223 and started with an 8lb trigger pull. I played around with it and put a ton of ammo through it and it ate everything up but my groups weren't very good, I'd get 2inch at 100 yard, sometimes less but 2in was the standard I found. Once I started reloading I got seriously into working to shrink those group sizes. I found I was loading my 55gr Vmax to very long OAL as the leade on my rifle was very long and it was a large jump to the rifling. But once I loaded longer to match and sit 0.015" off the lands, my groups shrunk and after getting a gunsmith to lighten the trigger down to 2lbs, and make it nice and crisp, my groups have shrunk to 3/4in so as long as you can spend the time and put some work into it, they will shoot pretty well. Recently gotten into longer ranges and started shooting around 3in groups at 400yards. Next project is to tighten those up.

Why are they hard to find - like some have pointed out H&R is kaput.

Some of their production was moved over to Remington - they are going to produce a couple of shotgun models but not much of anything else.

In the used market, there is a probably a bunch of guys like me that own a couple/few of these things and they are kinda like some of the stuff in the garage that you will just never get rid of.

I have a 20 gauge and a 410 - paid 80 bucks a piece for them "brand new" back in the 1980's. I have a 30.06 that included a 3-9X32 Bushnell Sharpshooter - that set me back $135 for the combo including shipping from SIR back in the late 80's.

So with less than $300 total in these three guns - all function fine and I can toss them in the back of the truck, not worry if they get banged up and they go "bang" when you pull the trigger, WHY would I ever get rid of them?

These are just one of those guns that if you own one you know you will regret selling it even before it's out of your hands - not because it's "great" or "collectible" or anything like that - mostly because you know your odds of ever replacing it are slim to none and you probably don't have much money invested in them.

So if they show up at a decent price they get snapped up right away - and I have seen some of these listed for over 400 bucks - I guess if you really want one....

A few weeks ago I found a used 20g barrel for mine and I snapped it right up. Seen a 12g barrel and looking at that one too. Pretty much every barrel I see I look at close or snap up. I will never sell mine. Heavy barrel .223 that shoots great.
