Harris Bi-pod mounting on M-14

I know that the bi-pod is mounted threw the 'water-drain' hole in the stock just in front of the sling swivel, but I was looking at the bi-pod I have on my Rem700P and I'm not sure how this system would apply the the M-14

Can anybody tell my the proper way to correctly install the Harris model L on the M-14

just buy the swivel with the thread and nut....and using the washer install it on the stock in the drain hole....so, you will use regular bipod as you want

You would want to reinforce the drain hole area before mounting a bipod there.That is the thinest part of the fore end.

I have seen a number of them cracked at the drain hole from having a bipod mounted there.

The easiest way is to build up the inside of the stock with steel expoxy and then mount the bipod hardware. Harris makes an AR-15 handguard adaptor that will work for this.

What you have to ensure is that you have enough clearance for the gas cylinder & op rod.You do not want any contact/rubbing here.

I can tell ya what I did. I used a dremmel (sp?) to cut a nice clean line on the plate which is used to attach the sling that is already mounted on your stock. I then drilled out the rivet closest to the mag well. I used a sling swivel stud and ground them down so there was only about a couple of mm of clearance. I then installed the stud with a washer and some of that lock tight stuff and made sure the clearance was good. Took about ten minutes and hasn’t cracked the stock or nothing. I carry this rifle almost every day hiking around and no problems. I then attached the quick release Uncle Mikes Sling gizmo to the bipod. It’s quick and real easy.

I got a nice aluminum, adjustable springed legged, clamp on, which would work on gas tube, I'm goining to try that, the work involved with the stock seems painfull. Any reasons not to clamp a bipod on that gas tube?

Accuracy will suffer if there is pressure on the barrel or gas tube from your rest, be it bipod or sandbag.

The gas cylinder is the worst place to put a bipod.

As said above, any type of pressure on the barrel/gas cylinder will cause accuracy to suffer.

Using Sling Rivet to Mount

Skullboy, would it be better to drill out the forward rivet on the sling mount rather than the drain hole? Would you still need to reinforce with steel epoxy? Would like your opinion before I start mounting my Harris.

This is another common method. The stock on my M14 (which I bought used, with this mod done) had the sling swivel drilled out, and the QD stud installed with the second rivet hole filled.

That area of the stock is probably strong enough without reinforcing, but you would still have to either fill that hole or put up with the ugly opening.

I used the drain hole on mine. Just put a QD swivel in it with washers for support.

I used a harris 2R adapter through the drain hole and expoxied the top of it.
