Has anybody built a 358 Win on a Ruger Scout?

Started thinking about how much I love my Ruger Scout and using it at shorter ranges as a brush gun and thought a 358 Win would be a good pairing for it.

Curious if anyone has tried this before and what their experiences were? My main worry would be getting a barrel profiled to match the Scout's stepped barrel which doesn't seem all that common. Assuming you could get a barrel blank and have it turned to the desired profile?

Something fun to think about! Let me know your thoughts!

A couple of years ago I bought a nice SS synthetic in 450 BM with the intention of doing just that. In a moment of weakness I bought a box of factory ammo to try before converting. Big mistake. That is one of the most accurate factory rigs with with plenty of hitting power and there is no way I can rebarrel it now.
So for now the 358 is on the back burner.

Send it to Ron smith or Bob jury and have them rebore it. Way cheaper an easier than rebarreling. Someone on here did one a couple years back.

This doesn't help with your question but a more practical solution may be to just use heavy bullets in the .308 and you will have similar performance to the .358. But gunnutz are gonna gunnut :)

Yep, by far the least amount of trouble and least expensive route to a 358 Scout.

I have had two Rem 600s done that way Both fed, fired, extracted, and ejected perfectly, and both were VERY accurate.

Hahaha, you're absolutely right Gatehouse. The more I thought about and read more and more on the cartridge and comparing ballistic charts for a whole bunch of comparables, it became apparent to me that this whole idea is purely driven off some inane fascination with obscure and far from trendy cartridges.

I keep hearing about great performing rounds that never caught on for one reason or another, and just have to try them for myself. I guess thats what make me a gun nut

Here is my recently completed Left handed Scout in .338 Federal (large scope is only for load developement) .358 Winchester is not a good option because it does not fit into Ruger magazines without modification (neck diameter cases canting)

It started out as a simple rebore with Ron Smith and dispite all the skill that man possesses it went sideways and the original barrel was ruined in the process. He made me a .338 gain twist blank and I final contoured and chambered it. As you can see, even with bead blasting the barrel it is very difficult to match the propriety Hawkeye grey colour. Between rebore/blank/reamers I am into to it for $1200+.
