Has anybody hunted deer with this?

I'm looking to hunt deer or other similar game some time this year. I have an 870 with a rifled barrel and a stock m14. I know there are better hunting firearms out there but I would like to work with what I've got. Has anybody hunted with an m14 running iron sights?? if so how did it work out.

Tips and advice are always welcome.

I have a friend who uses his M14 and finds it shoots accurate like anyhting else - only complaint he has is its WAAAAY freaking heavy.
 
I hunt a few days every season with my Garand, so the M14 will be fine. Two deer so far for my Garand, with hopefully many more to come. I don't know about the M14, but the Garand has near perfect balance for carrying, so the weight is not that noticeable in my experience.

I used to hunt with a Garand (iron sights) and a Norinco M-14 (iron sights and later scoped). I just had a regular sling on my Garand because I didn't know there was anything better. I used a 3 point sling on my Norc and it worked fine. The sling made it more bearable on my week long trips. If I still had either rifle I would get a VTAC 5.11 two point padded sling for them.

I haven't carried a Garand or an M14, but I agree, from experience with a variety of rifles, if the balance is right for carrying, the weight matters a lot less.
