Has anyone bedded and free floated a Ruger M77 MKII?

Howdy,

I have a Ruger M77 MKII with a wood stock that shot beautifully last summer when I sighted it in for hutning season, but I had her at the range last weekend and she is not hitting to the same place. It got rained on during hunting season, and I was reading that Ruger stocks may soak up water bad if not sealed properly.

I am thinking of just having it bedded and have the barrel free floated to reduce the chance of this happening again. Has anyone had this done? Has is negatively affected your accuracy?

Ruger stocks are bare inside. I suggest applying stock finish inside and to the checkering. I have bedded and floated lots of them. They usually work better.

Smearing some BLO into the inletting and checkering and allowing it to dry there couldn't hurt either

Rugers are unusual in that they have no support immediately in front of the lug, as most Mauser style actions do. They rely upon support at the forend tip. I suspect that makes them vulnerable to stock shrink/swell/warpage. Mine had a substantial warp when I bought it (used), pulling the barrel badly. I rebeded it with support as described above, and free floated it - much better.

"...makes them vulnerable to stock shrink/swell/warpage..." Any wooden stock that isn't sealed inside will shrink/swell/warp when it gets wet. Put a few coats of wood sealer on the inside once you've relieved where the stock is touching the barrel.
