Somthing portable that doesn't require a press? I'm sure I saw somthing along time ago that was similar to a hand held cannulare forming tool but can't seem to place it. Anyone?
I may be way out here but I have seen where a pair of wire crimpers have been used for crimping or producing "stab" type crimps like the old Kynoch ammo. You either use one of the existing "wire size" holes or adapt one of the holes to fit.
Crimping for most repeaters, revolvers, etc.. Recoil can start making the bullets walk out anytime they are subjected to it. Or walk in on a lever gun or other tube mag.
For single fire it may or may not be desired depending on what you are doing. Some of the BPCR loads I've shot and seen were Pope loaded with the bullet pushed into the throat and the full casing put in behind it.
I'd agree with the Lee setup if you want portable. Very versatile.
Many years ago, I needed to crimp lead 30 cal bullets in a 303 British. The die just would not crimp that bullet, even unsized.
The solution was a home made crimp tool. I simply drilled the wire cutters on an old pair of pliers with the appropriate sized bit, and presto, a crimp tool. I also used it to seat gas checks on un-sized cast bullets.
It worked very well.
The bullets however keyholed like crazy in the bigger bore of the 303.
I gave up and bought a mold.
