Hi guys - just wondering if a member here has chronographed their surplus 7.62x39? It would be interesting to know any information about deviations in velocity from lot to lot and manufacture to manufacture. I've read posts from other forums that indicated that the Czech stuff may be loaded considerably hotter than standard 2300fps velocity, but could find nothing on the net to confirm this.

I'm also interested in M43 data obtained from shorter barrel lengths. Mods: I posted this here as I believe it would get much more exposure than in the ammo section, hopefully you don't move it....

Any info you have would be greatly appreciated.:)

Interesting to hear that about it being loaded a little hotter. Was up at the range this morning. I took my usual pile of Czech surplus, but my buddy brought along some older Norinco non-corrosive to help feed my 858, and I noticed a real difference between recoil and the sound of the shot as well. To clarify here, I didn't shoot the Norinco stuff, but watching him shoot, I could sure tell the difference.

Sorry I didn't get it, but which load was hotter? NORINCO non-corr or CZ Surplus?

I've chrono'd the surplus and found that the older stuff in the blue boxes is around 2300 fps and the newer stuff in the plastic ( mid '80's) is around 2500 fps. That last is very hot for the calibre and the primers get very flattened.

Interestingly, I've tried reloading some 7.62x39 with a couple of different recipes and never done better than around 2100 fps. I don't know what they've got in that surplus but it sure works well.

Interesting, do you know what country the mid 80's stuff came from? Also, what rifle did you use for the test?

There is a huge variation in ammo from era to era, country to country and purpose to purpose for x39. M43 can have all sorts of powders, bullets etc. Pinning down one type for performance is almost impossible.

True..

It would be nice to know the velocity of current common surplus though, considering there is much variance from batch to batch.

I've shot Norc silver box and Czech surplus in the same session through my CZ858. The Norc POI was est 6 inches lower than the Czech surplus with the same POA and rear sight setting.

2400-2450 with czech surplus out of cz 858 just chronied about 50 rounds last weekend. Very consistent in my opinion considering it was surplus, in fact it was more consistent than a variety of my friends handloaded 22-250, 30-30 and 30.06 loads.

They sell surplus czech ammo in plastic bags now?

I would love buying ammo by the pound.

-'I'll have 20lb of that czech 7,62x39 please'

-'Paper or plastic sir?'

That is very true. I compared POI at 100 m with that at 200 m, which is considerably and surprisingly lower than I expected, with my handload.

I remember shooting Czech blue box from late-seventies at around 2450 fps from Yugo SKS. Hungarian stuff was about the same.

I've recently opened a crate from 1964 and it printed palm-size group of 10 rds with 2 only flyers, iron sight, at 300m. Yes, I have a target. ;)

On the other hand, I'm pushing my reloads to 2430 fps (123 SP Hornady, H335) from 18.5" CZ527 as the most accurate load for this bolt gun. But my 858 doesn't like it.
