Has Anyone Put a Charger Barrel on A Takedown 10/22?

Here's one the Calgary Shooting Centre built. I'm thinking of doing a similar project. My big question is should you stick with the factory 16" or go with the charger barrel. I was wondering if anyone has chrono it? What's the difference in velocity? How much bullet drop vs. stock barrel out to 100m? Is it even worth will putting the charger barrel on?

They are not "Charger" barrels... they are just short barrels... as long as the OAL is 26" plus the gun will be NR, assuming that you start with an NR receiver. If you start with a restricted Charger receiver, no matter what barrel you put on it, it will remain restricted.

The Adaptive Tactical barrel shown in the first post is actually called a "Charger" barrel by AT. From their website: "TAC-HAMMER RUGER® 22® CHARGER TAKEDOWN BARREL/RAIL COMBO". I believe they call them a Charger barrel since in the US you would only be allowed to install this barrel on a Charger pistol, unless you went through the legal process to create an SBR. Luckily we don't have those regulations in Canada.

As to the question: "...should you stick with the factory 16" or go with the charger barrel" - in my case the answer is do both! I really don't need a takedown 10/22, but I like having a modular rifle that can accept multiple different barrels.

I highly recommend the AT Charger barrel, I found it to be remarkably accurate, more so than the 16" AT version which I sold. I prefer the 16" Volquartsen to the 16" AT, shown in the bottom photo (better accuracy then the 16" AT and a better rail design).

I can't address the questions regarding velocity and 100m accuracy as the vast majority of my shooting is at 50m. Here are a couple of groups shot with the AT Charger barrel at 50 yards (using a Simmons 3-9 scope, not the red dot shown in the picture above):

I didn't think about that. I wonder if MAGPUL sells the forends separately? That would be the way to go. Have a bunch of forends and barrels, makes it a versatile rifle.

I started off with the 9" AdTac barrel and it was a decent performer with speeds around 925-975 FPS with HV bulk ammo. It fed and extracted most any bulk ammo with any kind of bullet profile like a champ and I was satisfied with it's 50 yard accuracy.
I sold it and imported a Whistlepig 12" barrel so I could be legal to hunt with it in BC and while the AdTac 9" barrel was good the Whistlepig barrel edges it out in 50 yard accuracy with 36gr HV bulk clocking around 1150FPS across the Chrono. The WhistlePig is slightly more picky about ammo but that's certainly due to Louis cutting a bit tighter chamber than the AdTac
As for 100 yard accuracy I really didn't notice much difference between the two. I certainly wouldn't sit down at the bench and try to print bitty little groups with a 10/22 Takedown {of which I have owned and shot several} with any length barrel. Personally, my 100 yard shooting with this rifle consists of busting clays and exploding full soda cans which is very easy and fun to do using a minimal hold-over.
The Whistlepig is the silver barrel in the bottom pics.

One of the reasons I have come to really love the Ruger 10/22 Takedown is,as already mentioned, its versatility. I consider my T/D a "switch barrel" and I keep a 16" Stainless threaded factory barrel with Skinner sights ready to grab at any time. If myself and my family were in a situation where we had to be armed my wife would carry the rifle in the configuration pictured below. With the front a rear sights both barrel mounted zero is spot-on everytime. I know Tom.E.Gun and others think along the same lines and run multiple configurations and therein lies the beauty of this rifle.

Jeepers! Looks like a good way to lose a finger on your forward hand! And I need all ten of mine for doing my income taxes, so I’m out!

:p

I swapped the 10" barrel from my Charger onto my 10/22.

Took the 18" 10/22 barrel cut it down to 5 inches and put that on my Charger in an Axiom Charger pistol stock.

And created a "PROHIBITED" firearm... some people should not own a keyboard...

It is not illegal to cut any barrel as long as it remains above 105mm. The crime is installing a barrel cut below 18.5" onto a non-restricted firearm, which would create a prohibited firearm.

Don't be so hard on your self, just because you are wrong now and then, you should still get to have a voice. Don't dispose of your keyboard just yet, lol.
