Has anyone seen a cougar in Ontario.

We had a BIG cow with puncture wounds to the throat (about 6? years ago). Even the vet who had to suture the holes
said that the wound was a big bite mark. We figure that the cow was protecting her calf from an attack.
There were alot of other "sightings" in the area at the time.

Not sure how true this is but a buddy that worked for the MNR said that Eastern Mountain Lions are protected in Ontario but Western Mountain Lions are not......impossible to tell the difference from sight, only DNA tests will reveal.

So go ahead and shoot it and claim you thought it was a Western Mountain Lion.....so sorry.

This is an excerpt from the link above regarding the eastern cougar...

"Cougars in southern Ontario are considered to be escaped pets."

Well, must be one hell of a kitty at 80-120 lbs!!

Dunno about Cougar but there is big feline in my hunting area near Perth Ontario.

the MNR has never denied that cougars could exist in Ontario, they have denied releasing any in Ontario. The cougar is native along with Bobcat and Lynx in Ontario.
While away moose hunting this year, the lastest rumor was that some menonites had shot one and the MNR had confiscated it because it was chipped. How true that is I dunno.
History repeating itself. In Saskatchewan in 1995, a good friend and my self got permission to deer hunt on a farm property following the banks of the Wood River.
Eight years previously, the landowner's consent was given and Saskatchewan Natural Resources & the assistance of a local zoo, released four cougar (two mating pairs) on thier private property.
Cougar have thrived, and have been gradually moving eastward & following peek deer populations as well. A few years later livestock owners in Manitoba noticed large feline tracks around rural farmsteads. The local CO's there, denied these were cougar tracks too.

I saw one about 10 years ago on the Sulton road west of Gogama, it was running out in front of me, thought it was a Bob Cat until it turned off the road and I got a better view of its tail.

My uncle had a couger running around his house that had chased a local young boy, if my memory serves right--I was only 11 or so at the time.

This was in Glengarry County (near Williamstown along the Raisin River).

I'm pretty sure that a bunch of local hunters set out and shot it, but this is all anecdotal hearsay. I don't have any real evidence (like the pelt LOL).

I've seen many in the bars in Toronto. They can be pretty scary and aggressive, so please be careful out there.

In deep enough snow a cougar will leave drag marks from it's tail. Otherwise it's tracks could very easily be confused with a lynx track.
I have a friend who is a much better tracker than Iam--he claims he can tell the difference between a bull and a cow track--he's right too--about 50% of the time.

In soft snow I guess you could confuse the two but when they leave a distinct pad print in firm snow, there's not much doubt.

As for the moose track...that's nothing....I know a guy that's right 1/2 the time!

I've heard rumours of cougars as well over the years. Haven't seen any myself, but I don't really doubt that they are there. Saw some big-cat tracks when treeplanting north of Thunder Bay a few years ago...

ya they can deny all they want I saw one this year near thunder bay walking with the family and my daughter pointed it out to me stalking us
good thing we had a dog 130 Lbs King Doberman

Near my son's farm west of Dryden there was a small bull killed, about 6 weeks ago, by what was rumored to be a Cougar(investigated by MNR biologist[not confirmed]).
Last week a teenage girl on horseback was reported to have seen a large cougar .
Last year we would see up to 47 deer at one time in my son's fields .This year , maybe 2 or 3 ....something is sure killing them .
