As the title say's, has anyone used the hornady 7.62x39 SST ammunition ? I bought a box at the LGS yesterday for my SKS as well as 120 rounds of surplus ammo. I am going to be going to the range today and am going to fire at least 5 of the Hornady rounds to see how they perform. if they do good, then I will save them for using on the local coyotes and anything else I can get a shot on during legal hunting season this fall.

I haven't used it for hunting (yet), but have burned through 50 rounds at the range and compared it against Czech surplus and Barnaul FMJ.

Group sizes are almost identical, in the 4-5" range, at 100 yards. That was with open sights on a 1952 Tula refurb, so your mileage may vary. Every barrel is unique, especially with mil-surps.

One thing to keep in mind is that it has a different ballistic trajectory than standard FMJ. Chinese surplus, Czech surplus, and Barnaul all run about the same at 100 yards, no noticeable change in point of impact at 100 yards. The Hornady SST rounds do hit noticeably higher, somewhere around 3.5-5inches at 100 yards. A full 360degree counter-clockwise turn on my front post brought point of impact back in line, or maybe it was 540degrees? Either one complete revolution, or one and a half.

Not sure why there's the change in POI, if it's that the ammo is loaded a bit hotter, or that the round itself has significantly better aerodynamics. I've heard both listed as the reason.

sorry about no range report yesterday, the local range I go to was closed over the weekend for a 2 day archery shoot. I recieved the e-mail about it but forgot and well, stuff happens. will be trying again tomorrow.

in for updates. I have a box myself but havent used any yet. I plink my surplus ill save this for "just in case" ammo LOL

fired 10 rounds at 50 yards yesterday, all hit in the upper right quadrant of the target i was shooting at. still need to find a sight adjustment tool for the SKS , once I have that I will hopefully get the shot's in the bulls eye of the target.

I've hunted watermellon with those rounds.

Way more effect on target than when using FMJ. Accuracy seemed equal to the usual surplus for me. Functioned fine in the -20 weather when I was firing them.

I found that my Czech surplus shot tighter groups than the Hornady SST in my 54 izzy refurb. with the Czech surplus, I could put 5 shots within 6-8 inches at 200yd on iron sights, where as the Hornady I only landed 2 on paper at 200. At 100, the difference was not as noticeable, but the surplus still shot tighter groups at all ranges.
