Has the 30-06 ever failed you?

A friend of mine whom I reload for had a failure with the 06, 165 gr Nosler BTs, at 2900 fps, hit a mule deer back bone, knocked it down, but by the time he got to it (down one slope and up another on the other side of a small valley), it bounced up and took off. We use Barnes X bullets (150 gr) now. Not as fast as the BTs, but oddly enough, more accurate in this particular rifle (Win 70 Ranger). Personally, I don't usually hunt with one (boring), but I own 4 or so and have tried them all out, with no real issues on any game I would use an 06 on. FWIW - dan

I tell my gf that my 30-06 is for moose only, because it does too much damage to deer... I have also told her that my 7-08 is only for deer and wont take down a moose.

Now, here comes the genius part..

When she starts hunting, I have said that I will have to buy her a rifle for deer and another for moose. = I get two more guns. Not bad eh?

I hope she doesnt figure this out or im phucked.

belts are for people who cant keep their pants up. Shot a whatever at a million yards. pants are too full of !&^$ and therefore need a belt...

Just kidding again...(why does everyody take me so serious around here anyways??) I would like a 300mag or 7mm mag one day!! Maybe even a 338-06?

As long as I did my job the 06 did its job,Although I have seen people knock down whitetails only to have them get up and run away never to be seen again.:(

Hey guys..

I know everyone and there mother has a 30-06 in the closet...

I just wanted to know if its ever failed you..

ie.. you put a shot where it should have killed / did kill something but the performance was lackluster.

would like to hear from the ontario guys (short range shots) and the bc guys (longer ranged shots)

NEVER! In reality, I don't need anything else, other than a 375. DID I SAY THAT?

Jack O'Connor said "there is really no difference between a .270 and the 30/06". If you don't know who Jack is, well, anything he said is worth remembering.

I have four 30.06s, three bolts and an rem auto (which I retired)

Why have a bunch of different calibers? All my ammo can be used in any of my big game rifles. As for long range, the 30/06 will shoot as far a I will ethically shoot a big game animal.

Hasn't failed me, but I failed it. I have my Dad's .30-06 Husqvarna feather weight, and I used it a couple of years ago on my 1st Mule Deer hunt in Alberta. Buck fever or I couldn't believe the size of the Deer, anyway, as BIG as it was, I missed that one. Did get the next one though.:)
