Good Day, just picked up this CVA Hawken from a fellow CGN'er today...
I have been shooting an Uberti Colt 1860 for a while now and really enjoy it, thought it was time to try a rifle!
Anyways, the nipple on this is completely different... Has it been converted to 209 caps? I asked the seller and he had no idea... he just inherited the piece, BP wasn't his thing.
Thoughts?

This handy little gadget allows the rifle to use centerfire (likely pistol....but often small rifle) primers to ignite the powder, in place of percussion caps. To use, simply unscrew the cap, place a primer in the cup and screw the cap back on. Upon firing, the hammer strikes the top of the cap, driving the pin inside the cap(you can clearly see it in the photograph), into the primer. The primer goes off, which in turn ignites the main powder charge. A great little invention.

To answer your question fully. It is possible the cup may hold a 209 primer. Try one for fit. The cup doesn't appear deep enough in the photograph. But possible.

use small rifle or pistol primer makes it easier to get the fired primer out large rifle or pistol can be a pain, need a pick or a very thin knife blade. never tried a shotgun primer.

Called the 'hot shot' I believe. Designed to use small pistol or small rifle primers. Work OK but not fast to reload.

Had a chance to try out some primers... 209 don't fit, but the small rifle primers do. What primers have you guys have had luck with? I have a bunch of cci 400 small rifle kicking around.

The CCi primers you have will work just fine. As will any other small rifle primer. As with any other percussion system, make sure that the flame pathway is clear to the main powder charge.
