I was up in the Cariboo on the weekend hunting as i had a doe tag.

On a beautiful saturday morning, sunny and white with frost,i was really enjoying being out.
Within 15 minutes or so, i spot a good size deer not more than 60/70 yds away, a nice buck. He was not spooked in any way with me just continued feeding.
Then i spot a nice size doe, and take her with a nice clean shot, and forget about the buck.

I cut my tag and then get ready to dress her out, look up and hear walks over that buck right toward me.

He was no more than 10 yards away, and he just stood there, moved around to the side of me and just hung around no more that 15yds. at the most.
He was there for the whole time that i dressed out the doe and got her into the back of the truck.
That was the craziest thing

That has never happened to me. However, I have returned to a kill site the next day only to find the area covered in fresh deer tracks.

Haggis, was there a point limit? Why didn't you take the buck?

Yup, with both deer and moose.
I have also seen tracks all over a gut pile, and have seen deer turn inside out trying to get away when comming upon a gut pile.
Just goes to show that they are super unpredictable!

Had something very simular happen to me with my Mule deer in '99.

I shot the buck which was with 2 does. At the shot, both does ran, walked up to my Deer, tagged it, and one of the Does comes back out and watches me.

As I was dressing it out, she was ever so slowly advancing closer. She got close enough to me that I ended up tossing a couple of sticks at her to get her to give me some room.

On the drag back to the truck, she stayed about 20 yards behind me, moving when I did, stopping when I stopped to rest.

It was dark by the time I got him to the truck but could still hear her walking around when I got him loaded up.

I haven't experienced anything like that before, or since. Weird stuff.

We are allowed only 4 point bucks (or bigger) in November and a total of two deer for the season and i already got a nice buck earlier so i was tagged out ( he was a 2 point, but a very nice size )

I was more concerned on keeping an eye on him, for a while there, i wasn't sure what he was going to do, hell, for all i new, he may have taken a run at me for shooting his girlfriend :?

Most times it's tough to find a nice buck, and then they don't hang around, so for this guy to walk right up to me !!!!!! :?

Last year I shot my 4x4 mulie off my front porch. He was with a group of other deer, none of whom spooked at the shot.

The deer moved off a ways when I went over to get him, but as I was dressing him out, a few moved within about 30 yards or so and continued feeding.

I found this odd as well.

I have experienced the same with deer and elk.

After shooting a buck, another buck would come around and watch me gut it out from about 25 yards.

After shooting an bull elk with two cow's, one cow would hang around and watch me gut out the bull, from about 50 yards.

Also, I have watched Canada geese, come back and while flying in a circle call for a grounded and wounded fellow geese.

The wildernes is one big restaurant where everybody eats everybody, and we humans are very much part of that food chain, so I just ignore these animal behaviors, and go on with my gutting.

Without doubt, these animals that are watching us with a kill with of one of their own species, are clearly registering and remembering our human hunting behaviors for a possible future avoidance with a collison from a hunters supersonic missile.

Most likely the Doe was in "heat" and the Buck found this too irresistable to know better.
Had a similar experience with two bucks a few years ago, shot the Big One and when I began to clean him out the smaller 3x3 came back out and stood less then 20 yards away staring at "us" I tried to shout him away but he just kept sneaking back..........I guess I killed his sparring partner and he just couldn't let go.
Also had a Doe walk out in front of my truck and stop on the road about 5' from the front bumper........I stopped and to my surprise a Big 4x4 came up out of the ditch with his Nose up her ars, he never looked at the truck at all, in fact he acted like I wasn't even there......she wandered off the road into the dark with the Buck right in tow...Love makes them do funny things ;)

Yeah this happened to Toomer this year... two bucks fighting over a doe... he shot one and then the other when it returned a couple of minutes later.
Then while he was gutting a third buck showed up just for a look....

what the fudge Haggis? Was he taking notes? Maybe he has his sights set on a stevens 200 in 30-06 and wants to do the same with you for shooting his b**ch hahaha

After I shot my buck last year a huge buck watched me dress and drag my deer up the mtn.I could have hit him with a rock. There was a pile of does as well but they sort of casually wandered off.The big buck stayed for at least an hour though.

Thias year while mule deer hunting my nephew filled his anterless tag, so I drive as close to it as possible to retreive it and get my damn truck stuck. So I call my uncle to come with his tractor and as we are waitng the buck she was with shows up again and walks righ tup to my tail gate and sticks his noise over to smel the doe. He must smell th eblood because he bolts about 30yards from the truck then comes right back again. Strangest thing I have ever seen, I took pictures but didn,t realize camera was on the wrong setting and you can't even see the buck 5 yards away man that sucked.

Had a buddy get a visit from a big blackie a few years ago when he was gutting a moose but that's different.

I think I'd be worried that the buck hanging around might get a bee in his bonnet and try to stick his antler where they don't belong.
