Has your "taste" in shotguns changed over the years?

I mean by "type of action".

When I was a teenager my favourite actions were the over/unders and semiautos.

I hated the sxs models. I used to call them "Grandpa's shotguns".

Over the years I owned O/Us, semis, pumps, single shots and even bolt action shotguns. I never had a sxs.

Now I must admit that the horizontaly stacked barrels are appealing to me  . I still prefer the O/Us and semis but I think I will eventualy acquire a sxs one day...

My question to CGN shotgunlovers is : did your preferences about action type change over time ?

While in Africa I would not even have considered a pump or auto-loading, was all O/U and SXS. Now I have a pump and thinking about a auto-loading

When I was young I had little intrest in shotguns, when I went into the military I saw there use and have been a die hard fan of shotguns ever since.
Went from none to 15.

Started out years ago with a plain jane 870. Got better jobs and bought "better" shotguns. ie: Browning Citoris etc. As of late I am back to the 870 with a few Mossy's thrown in. I have one double I think it is a fun gun to hunt with.

cheers Darryl

16 years ago, I started with a pump... Several years later, I went to a double... Then to a semi... And finally, I went BACK to the pump and I have STAYED with it...

In my opinion, a pump is the best shotgun out there...

Cheers

Certainly. When I was a kid I would never have considered anything but a pump or an auto - prefferably an auto.

These days I don't have an auto. I still have a 14" pump action as a truck gun, but more and more these days I use a double that I bought on impulse at an auction a few years back. If I bought another shotgun anytime soon it would be a 20g double.

Well at the young age of 22, my first shotgun was a Toz 34ER.
A week later a RYS, another week later another Toz 34ER and an MC 20-01.
Then Armrus closed up shop.
About 2 weeks ago, a brand spanking new HP9-1 with Hogue OM stock set, +1 extention and 6 shot side saddle. Oh, and until June, I'm still 22 years old.
Can't wait to see what I'm gonna get at age 23!
OH HELLS YEAH!!!!!!

I started off with an 870 MM, then a Nork 14" 870, then have moved on to a Baikal single shot and a TOZ34. Still have the MM but the TOZ and the Baikal seem to always come to the range, esp. after the Baikal got the barrel cut down to 18.6", makes a great cheap backpack gun.

10 years ago, I couldn't care less about wood and engraving. I had a pump 870, and thought semi's were cool. The only O/U I knew about was a .22 over a .410.

Now I want an O/U that costs about as much as a new truck (fancy wood and cool engraving). I still like to hunt with a pump. Would like to own a high end semi. The prospect of a SxS would be pretty cool, but it would take time to get used to the double triggers.

Brad.

I love my 870, pump is the my pick for best overall shotgun choice. BUT a little work with a SXS is sure fun, makes a nice change too. SXS feels more elegant.

Well... I started with pump (870) and quickly realized that it’s not the best gun for hunting and quickly moved to semi. I managed to get 5 time more geese with semi next season at equal opportunity (in Ontario you have to plug shotgun so it cannot hold more then 3 shells, so it wasn’t about speed). So in my opinion, pump fell way behind semi. However, I kept only one pump (Rys) mostly for Zombies and other "bad-asses". I have to admit, sound of a loaded shell in the "pump" stops any “idiot” ;) + it’s good for shooting slugs. Then I tried O/U and a big fan after that. It’s perfect for anything that doesn’t fly in flocks… It’s universal since you can hold slug and #2 shot at the same time! You can switch shells in a jiffy as well. SxS…. I never tried it, but I wouldn’t mind to have an old one with beautiful engraving…

Also, my friend has a MC-8 shotgun (Olympic grade) and I wish I had enough money to buy it off and use it for skeet…

new

I am fairly new to serious shotgunning despite having owned guns and hunted for 35 years. It's only in the last five years that I've been waterfowling with an old 2 3/4 inch 870 I got at a gun show for $150.

I shot a buddy's over under Baikal 20 gauge and Beretta semi-auto 12 at clays on the wekend and I'm in love.

I want both, plus a Browning Auto-5 another pal has that he doesn't use any more.

My tastes change with my interests. Where I was once a trap shooter my move to sporting clays means I no longer own a dedicated trap gun.

My tastes have also changed as far as gun quality is concerned. I've owned many different shotguns but over the years have moved toward owning fewer but higher quality guns.

I believe in the right shotgun for the job. I currently own a couple of over/unders for targets, a semi for targets and waterfowl, a sxs for upland and a pump gun for predator control and slug hunting. Each has its place in the scheme of things and I wouldn't want to be without any of them.
