I took out my newly acquired Hawken 50cal and shot it for the first time the other day.......first it was about a foot high at 50 yds. so I crank the rear sight down and the three .490 roundballs were pretty close together at the end of my test.......

Definintely without a doubt I am going to take a mule deer or moose with this rifle next month.........

Far out , huntinstuff!!
The .50 will do on a moose at about 100 yards, but make sure it goes into the lung/heart area!

A 50 cal will bust the shoulder of a deer at about 100 yards.
My first was a Lyman .50, but I have been shooting a .58 Fraser river Hawken since 1981.....

Well done huntinstuff, I have been taking whitetails with a .50 cal round ball for the past 15 years or so. They work great out to 100 yards, pushed by 80g of FFG, or Pyrodex. I hope to deliver the round ball with my new Austin & Halleck flinter this year. Happy hunting.

The rifle is a Fraser River Hawken, made by Don Robinson's shop in Prince George.
Hornhead also shoots one but his is a Hawken hunter, a bit smaller framed rifle.

Mine is all L&R furniture , claro walnut stock, late 1800's style.
Sharron barrel that still shoots well.
