Hauling big game in an SUV... what do you do?

I would recommend 2x Iceboxes and just quarter your animals in the field. Leave all the unneeded stuff behind... Put the coolers on a tarp in the back just in case the blood leaks out. Not only do you not have to dump hide, head and hooves in the garbage - you also get nice fresh meat too.

Ayup! Perfect reason to get a little utility trailer. Get one 'just' big enough to haul a quad in, then haul it in to camp behind the quad. Lots of room on either side of the quad for the carcass and gear, for the trip out.


If that fits your hunting, in any case.

Other than that, a heavy duty hay tarp of reasonable size to wrap a deer or moose in the back of the SUV, is pretty cheap and if you add a few plastic meat bags to the mix... Life is good!

I bet all are grandfather's just strapped them on the hood and drove home threw town.ah the good old days.frarti had the right idea a kids sled works very well to drag them out and fits nice in the back to keep everything clean .
 
A couple of buddies used to go for Antelope/Muleys in Wyoming. They hauled a trailer on which was a small freezer & a full-time running generator providing power all the way home !

The ice fishing sled looks like a winner for short transport homewards though !
 
Skinned and quartered would easy go in a big cooler with a couple big blocks of ice
You could de-bone some of it as well

But the ice sled looks like a good idea for sure

Or the blue tarp...........
 
either a tarp or a receiver hitch cargo basket work fine for our puny sask whitetails and muleys

No buck I've ever shot would fit in a cooler quartered? (I've only ever shot Mule Deer bucks though). A doe might fit. My 2 coolers aren't the really gigantic ones, but those big totes go on sale all the time. The photo savagelh posted is exactly what I'm trying to avoid! And that's about the size of buck I'm talking about too.

The first few years I hunted, I didn't know better than to gut the deer and bring it home to skin etc. Now the hide stays in the bush, and likely the head as well, unless there's a great pair of antlers attached. I'm going gutless altogether from now on, so I figure two totes for the quarters and a cooler for the boneless meat will work nicely. I'll have a pickup again next year when I may be after an Elk or Moose.

I was thinking one of the big 150 quart marine coolers..........
 
I've always had a pick up, but the theory is the same for in a pick up box, I use those tarp bags with handles, there used to be a company that sold them for x amount of dollars and would come pick up and disposed of what ever you could fit in it. You can now buy just the tarp bags at local hardware stores basically a tarp pool.
