Hauling the 4 wheeler

I am going bear hunting this summer and I am bring my 4 wheeler. The thing is that I have to leave the tail gate down because I have a Crew Cab and it won't close.

Obviously I will tie the machine down properly but I was wondering if anyone hauls there 4 wheeler around like this?

What do you use to strap it down for the long trips?

I have a toyota tacoma, I always have to leave my tail gate down. The first thing i did was buy a tail gate "extender' or rack(what ever they are called. this does 3 things 1. it gives you more usable space in the box, 2 it keeps stuff in the box from flying out, 3 it helps keep the tail gate from bouncing. I put a jerry can or my chain saw box on the tail gate to help keep it from bouncing as well(plus i can get a deer in this space if i have too) I have had good luck with this and i spend alot of time hauling my quad around in the back of my truck.

As for tying down, i am pretty picky. i use 4 ratchet straps, good ones not the crappytire ones. I get mine from napa or some other parts store. They tend to have a greater strength and double hooks. I then attach from the quad frame (both sides)on the front to the back truck hooks, ( the quad wont move forward). I then tie from the back quad frame to the front truck hooks, ( this keeps the quad from rolling back). This has been the best system i have come up with so far. I have done some pretty good off roading with this set up and have never had any issues.

This might not be the best but it works for me. NWT
 
Must be smaller than a 6.5' box. Should close if its 6.5' with aggresive tires.

Must be a Ford or Chev with the 5.5' box

Good pull downs will work or use pull downs up front with a ratchet strap at the back
 
I use four ratchet straps on my quad when its in the back of my F-150. I have a headache rack that I butt the quad up against and tighten it down. I have been all over BC with it like this and never had any issues with it moving around in the box...

Not always. I can't close my tail gate, but its not the tires that are the cause, its the bumpers on the quad that make it to long.

To answer the question what to use to tie it in, I use 4 ratchet straps. Its worth the few extra bucks to buy good ones.
 
long as all the tires in the box..tie it down good and go hunting..if one set of tires rest on tailgate,get a sheet of 3/4 plywood,then lay it in the box and let over hang go on tail gate
 
I have an F-150 Supercrew with the 5.5' box. I use two large ratcheting tiedown straps and made a 5,000 km drive last fall like this, 1,000 of which was on logging roads with no problem. I have seen guys just use bungee cords, but for me more is better and will cause less difficulty in the long run.

Formerly, I had a Silverado and did the same thing. Couldn't close the tailgate on either truck.

I was a little paranoid at first, so I secured a chain approximately 5' long with padlocks to the front of the box using the two box tie down hooks. I then attached the winch of the bike and carefully tightened it up - rock solid anchoring, and makes it a little harder to steal if one was so inclined.

Of course, you have to be extremely careful in doing this as the winch likely has the power to rip the tiedowns right off the truck. I never had a problem though and those who saw it thought it to be a good idea.
 
My yamaha 660 in the back of my 1500 Dodge Ram doesn't fit either... if only I had another 3 inches... (;)) ...I could close the gate.

But with good tie downs, no prob. If you're picky, put a wire cable across the front of the box from one side to the other (If you have tie down points inside the box?) and attach your winch hook to it for added security.

If you're really picky, go to Cabella's and look at their accessories - they have a few different ways to secure ATV's onto trailers and pickups.

But I would say just leave the gate down and use 4 straps, (2 per side) tie her down tight, and go.
 
I have the same problem with my extended cab GM 1/2ton 4x4. Four heavy duty cam straps hold my 4wheeler in. Although my next truck will have a real box on it. I can't stand the glorified wheel barrel for a box on this truck:mad:.
