Havalon knife

I've seen them in action and it's time to buy in. Basically the equivalent of a utility construction slider but with a better profile. My brother cut himself with one dressing out his buck in 2019. He was digging around freeing up the diaphragm which can get a bit soupy especially with the adrenal glands still pumping. Decent cut and pretty deep. First time I've ever pulled my first aid pack out to assess and dress an owie.
 
My boy got one for xmas, and I thought it was kinda cheezy. Come the next time to butcher a steer, it was on counter so I took it outside with me for him to use, but I ended up using it myself and was surprisingly satisfied with it. I swapped out blades once dull, but clean them up afterwards and give them a couple licks on the spyderco sharpmaker, they sharpen very sharp, very easily... I haven't bought one for myself, only because I have access to his.
 
Good for people that don't like sharpening knives. Any side pressure on the blades and they snap like twigs. Personally, I'm not a fan. For caping where I need a scalpel-like blade, I use a scalpel with disposable blades, the blades are much more flexible.

This is pretty much how I feel aswell. I have one, but almost never use it.
 
Use mine on birds all the time and absolutely love it, but I don't hunt big game so never tried it on anything bigger. I usually buy the 10 pack of heavy duty blades from Cabelas when they are on sale, you can pry pretty decent with those, but that isn't what it is ment for anyway. I have used about three blades in the last two years, they last a long time cleaning birds.
 
Great for caping but easy to break around bones. I usually carry a havalon and a 5” victorinox boning knife.
 
I’ve used a buddy’s a couple times and it’s not for me, I prefer a small fixed blade knife I can touch up with a steel in the field. Also if I do nick or cut myself I’d rather it not be with a scalpel, that said they are bloddy sharp and work well for what they’re designed to do. Just not my style of knife for the field dressing.
 
I really like my havalon. I bought the larger one that you can use the bone saw blades on, as well as regular scalpel blades. If I am on a pack hunt that’s all I’ll bring. If weight is not an issue I’ll bring the havalon and a ka-bar, and they cover pretty much any situation.
 
great for geese, ducks, upland game, skinning- period. Not a great big game knife? because the blade is just too small, and, be friggin careful - dont cut yourself!! One of my favs since they 1st came out - I have the same one.
