If your part of the country has had or is expected to have, a gopher infestation problem this spring/summer, let us know where you are and who to contact. We arranged this a year or so ago and hooked up lots of shooters with farmers.

To those of you who live in gopher areas, please post up a notice at the Ag or Feed store or the liquor mart, letting other farmers know that we can hopefully get some shooters out to help them with their varmint problem. They contact you, then you post your name up as a 'local contact' and anybody on the board will then send you a PM. Again, let people know what part of the province you're in, like your R.M. or town name.

Let's get started guys, we need to do some planning to help put a dent in the varmint population as early as possible.

You are a little early on this. Most aprts of Ab and Sask, won't know if they have a gopher problem for at least a month. FS

I want to shoot some gophers, but just need to know where to go.
I have heard from a few people that the gophers in town have been spotted.

Saw my first squeaks of the year Friday afternoon heading from the east into Ponoka had my wife with me so no chance to stop and shoot it... :(

Killed about 50-60 at our place so far. The best way to combat an infestation is to start on them early :)

If the sun is out in the morning, I will be too...

I gotta agree with Fassteel - around our neck of the woods, there's still 2 feet of snow in the fields and will be until the end of March. The earliest I ever got out gopher shooting as a kid was late April, when the fields dried out enough to even be accessible.

Don't know if they are going to be as big a problem as the last few years but my brother and I were out shooting them yesterday and in about an hour and a half we must have shot about 150.

Google earth is a good place to start your gopher search. I look for pastures in likely areas and follow up with some ground work. Knock on lots of doors. Have never been turned down by a farmer/rancher unless there were livestock concerns. Once you have a foot in the door other land opens up by word of mouth. These days our hunting opertunities are limited by the amount of time we are willing to put in... and amount of ammo that can be loaded!

hey gopher lovers ;) what do you guys use to hunt gophers? which calibers are preferred? can 22lr do the job? i want to hunt gophers this summer, any groups going out in calgary area?

I prefer a 22lr because its cheap to shoot, fairly quiet so you don't need earmuffs, and doesn't overheat the barrel if you shoot many times a minute for hours on end.

I'll be using the following this year...

22LR
17HMR
204 Ruger
223
22-250
6mm-284

My favorite of these is the 17HMR it will reach out to 200 yards but when considering cost it is 3 - 4 times more expensive than a 22LR...
