Have any of you older folk been shot at with rock-salt or other deterrants?

Not me, but my father in Italy. He and his friends would gorge themselves on cherries at the local orchard. He was never hit, but one of his buddies took one to a ham-string. Folded him like a lawn chair.

Someone that my grandfather knew was going to dust a dog that kep't sxxting in his yard and he kep't the shell's in the kitchen and they must have got weat because one turned into a salt slug and droped him in his track's

My dad told me of a kid he went to school with...got caught peeping in peoples windows...girls dad let him have it in the back with birdshot as he was running away....didnt tell anybody until it was so badly infected his mom had to take him to the hospital!!

my dad's firend when they were kids got nailed right in the arse with rock salt! they used to ride their bikes through some guys garden to piss him off. imagine riding your bike and then being shot in the ass with rock salt!! that would hurt like a SOB

Yes, but I take offense to the older folk reference !!!! I seem to think that it still might happen?

My parents had a good rock salt story. They were driving somewhere in the US (US citizens) and my mom spotted an irresistible pear tree and she asked my dad to stop the car. While she was picking the pears out comes Mr. Crochety farmer with his shotgun yelling at her. So she drops the pears and runs for, what she thinks is her life. He shot her while she was running in the legs, but she managed to make it back to the car and they got away. Both of them always said that she deserved every grain of salt that she got and they were lucky it wasn't buck shot the guy used. Lucky for her she had a very high pain tolerance, but even she described the experience as absolutely excruciating. This is a woman who had three kids with no pain killers of any kind because she didn't agree with taking "drugs"!

When I was a kid [40+ years ago] living in south Vancouver, me and the gang, used to go to Richmond, a few miles away, on our bicycles.Late at night, we would creep, into the farmers fields, and raid fruit trees.More than one of us, got butt shot, with rock salt.It penetrates clothing and imbeds just under the skin. The pain is something else.Needless to say we didn't make many return trips. If we complained, our parents told us, we deserved it.In those days there was no sympathy for rock salt victems. It just seemed funny to most people. It was the farmers right, to protect his property. It was scarier but a lot more fun to be a kid back then.Nobody cared that we shot our airguns around the neiborhood. As long as we left their windows alone.

I got a load of salt on Halloween in the early 60s. In most of the small towns , the outside toilets were a common thing. At Halloween, it was a joke to tip these awful smelling "biffies" or take them away and hide them in railroad boxcars. During one of these "friendly" raids on a knowing homeowner, he was waiting inside the "biffie" and when we tipped it over he let go with a double shot of rock salt and wheat. Terrible sting and you remembered it for about a week. Burning stings from the salt and bruises from the wheat grains.

my friends and I were shot at by a farmer for using his land to get to the local gravel pit, just had to cross the corner of his property, ten feet of his driveway was crossed, When the farmer came out we went to approach him to ask permission...we got an answer from about 25yrds...bugger letus get close enough to ask and be shot....Thats ok...no problem..everyone has the right to ask ya to leave ..but shoot at us and you'll get yours too....latter that week we all took up positions on the edge of the property line...one guy started his bike and revved it up real good..and when the old frigger came out we let him have it with crab apples and slingshots...hehehehehehe...old bugger could really move....he wasn't laughing this time though..we were...never went passed that...thinking about it now I would have probably had him charged instead....cheers

Got shot at twice in my life (one was I assume accidental, the other seemed a bit more deliberate), was never hit, and I doubt tot his day that the deliberate incident was more than a warning shot. Not a pleasant feeling either way.

I used to hear that they carried shotguns loaded with it on the trains and would blast animals that wouldn't get off the track, or perhaps hobo's trying to hitch a ride. I can't see why a course grade of rock salt wouldn't cause damage at say 30 feet.

The thing is that salt is hydroscopic (attracts moisture) so after awhile (anywhere from a week to several years) it turns into a solid slug, which is a bad thing, obviously ...
