Have Arms 18, need Scope advice

Hi Folks;
I bought an M14 with Arms 18 mount from a fellow CGNer. It shoots really straight with iron sights so I'd like put a scope on my rifle and see what she can do.
I have a couple of questions:
I was looking at an inexpensive 3-9 x 50mm Bushnell from Cabelas.ca.

Any advice on an inexpensive scope for an M14?

Will a 50mm Objective scope fit properly on this mount ?
What kind of rings should I get ?

I've never mounted a scope before but would like to try.

I have a Tika T3 light 3006 for Moose hunting so my M14 would be mostly for the range.

Actually you can use the iron sights just fine with many of the scope mounts out there. For example the SEI that I have is grooved underneath to allow use of sights. I believe the ARMS 18 is also. The disadvantage of high rings is the high line of sight that you then have to deal with.
 
Cheap scopes and M14s do not mix. The forces from action cycling will rapidly damage them. If you want to go with Bushnell, the Elite 3200 series is the minimum you would want to use.

See-through rings would mount your scope ludicrously high, given that you would likely want to attach a cheekpiece to your stock, even with low rings. You should be able to use iron sights with the ARMS 18 anyway.
 
Thanks for the replies folks, I am real happy with the Arms 18 mount. I am looking for specific scope and ring suggestions and appreciate the advice. I have used the search function and have been reading lots of posts. I'd like to get the scope mounted as low as possible.
tjhaile I will try to find an Elite 3200 series. It is a real nice rifle (upgraded op rod and springs and a fiberglass stock) so I guess I should cough up some bucks to put a nice scope on it. I'd like a mil dot / Bdc scope.
M14s are Fun!

This is the second time I've read that M14's are hard on scopes. I don't really understand why. The force of the recoil doesn't feel very bad at all on M14. Short of ejected shells hitting the scope why would it be any worse than any other 308 rifle?

I vote for 3200 10x (especially since it's not a hunting scope) and preferably TPS low rings because I want to see how well that setup works before I buy an ARMS 18!

The TPS rings are awesome and the scope is great, but I have never mounted them on an M14. I have 100% confidence in both the scope and the rings on an M14, though; they have both been used extensively on other rifles and lots of people have used them on m14s. The scope is mildot with target turrets and nice and clear...best scope for the money I've ever bought personally.

The op rod slams back VERY hard. Any other 308 rifle the force is translated out the muzzle or into your shoulder.

Bolt action rifles aren't flinging a ?? ounce piece of metal back and forth 6 inches faster than you can blink. You are getting recoil in both directions. Have you ever mounted a rim fire scope on an air rife? Reverse recoil, that the scope is not designed for occurs. They don't last very long.

How does a guy know what scopes will last and which won't? I don't really want to shell out $500.00 to scope a $500.00 dollar rifle.

So powmia56 I geuss you didn't like my rifle when you were at 45ACPKING's clinic last weekend? I did mount a check rest on it though. Also the mount's I listed are just under an inch & are also have a gaint hole in the middle of it so you can use the irons for 100m or less and tilt your eyes up so you can use the scope for 100m and greater range or am I just out to lunch???

I like all M-14 rifles. :bigHug: I just find that with a high mount scope, I have to crane my neck to use the scope or put a big fat cheek rest to get my head up higher. Since I plan on using the scope as my primary and the iron sights as my backup, I would rather have a low scope that I can more comfortably shoot and have to squinch down a bit to use the iron sights if my scope blows up in the middle of a battle. Any other time I can just grab a wrench and take the scope off.
 
I've got the arms 18 mount, arms 22 low rings and a bushnell 6-24x50 tactical mil dot. Theres about 1/8 of an inch clearance with the rear sight aperature removed. Ya can't have everything had to give up the irons to get the scope nice and low.
 
Thanx for the input. I got some of these rings so I will have to try it. Oh ya powmia56 this time I will try to shot 100 rounds instead of 3. LOL! You probaly are still laughing about that one!
