Have I been screwed buying unique powder ?

I'm on the road right now. I stopped at a store to buy dies for 223 because I want to reload for my AR15. I already reload 9mm for my handguns and didn't have my reloading book but the guy sold me Unique powder saying I'd be OK for a wide range of recipes.

Like I said I'm on the road and can't confirm if I'll be able to find recipes for this with 55gr boat tail bullets. Was it a good choice ? The more I look the less I'm confortable with it.

Thanks !

Unique is a shotgun and pistol powder.

It will not be well suited to loading for your .223.

It may be usable with very light charges, but will be a long ways from a versatile propellant for your use.

I'd suggest a different powder for your .223. Alliant has several recipes with Reloader 10X in their online data. That might be a good start for your .223.

here are some proven powders for the AR in 223.

If they have rifle powder they must have at least one of these...

A fast powder like Unique could make a plinking load but port pressure might be so low the action won't cycle. You have been lead astray. A very poor recommendation.
