Have my 8.5 Grizz. Can I put a Pistol Grip on it?

That link and last post made me even more confused. Example. If you own an 870 Remington with a factory stock and put on a factory manufactured 12.5" barrel from dominion arms it still has an OAL of over 26". So this gun is non restricted right?

This is the way I have understood it, but that last post made it sound like if you took off the original factory barrel and put on a shorter barrel you are making it prohibited? But what if you had a 30" barrel and took it off to put on a 18.5" barrel. You would still be prohibited? That cannot be right.

It is confusing. I thought there was no barrel less than 18.5 that could be non restricted. I am in the process of making a pistol grip single shot 12 guage, i figure if i keep barrell 18.5 and overall length 26" i will be fine.

Here's an odd thought, what if you bought a stock system, such as this ATI 6 position stock, even though the adjustable butt stock is held in place by 2 easily removable Philips head screws without it, you could either have a prohib or restricted, as you'd only have just the pistol grip without it.

When I had my guns confiscated, I didn't get charged for having modded my HP9 with a 14.5" bbl with this stock (with the entire stock) - I'll have to go home to measure it to see if I'm over 26" or if I just got lucky and the firearms officer was being lazy.

K, I'll bite... why did you have your guns confiscated? Slow day....

Doesn't matter. The same reason most folks who have guns have them confiscated - making enemies.

What matters is I got them back and have a clean criminal record. I just got my renewed PAL in the mail :)

Back to the OP though - I'd say the best strategy is to just be discrete with your super short, police magnet shotguns. Take them to private ranges preferably ones who sell them, and if you're romping around in the wilderness with it, don't be seen with it.

That's the idea. I bought it with the intent of stowing it away in my pack when I'm out in the bush. The main plan was to only have it out if my bike breaks down and I've got to hike for a while. Right now the top half of the stock sticks out of my pack about 3-4 inches....which is no big deal but IMO out of sight, out of mind......

I'd suggest putting a sock or something over the stock just as an added precaution.

Just to add to the confusion I read another post somewhere that you should leave part of the the gun showing out of the pack to avoid a 'concealed weapon charge' which didn't make so much sense to me on a practical level, as well as drawing unnecessary attention to the fact you have a gun, intent should have some application if this became a legal issue?

It sucks that people feel the need to hide away somthing that is perfectly legal because the people enforcing the rules don't know them. In reality we should be showing them off and letting people see them so that people would maybe learn the rules and be less negative. The sad fact is if you get charged and don't cough up the $$$ for a lawyer you may not get off even if you are in the right not to mention the time involved. Like i mentioned earlier i am curently building a pistol grip single shot 12 guage for a truck gun. It will be well within the law but i will also do my best to be discreet in fear of being harrased. We need to have a "bring your gun in public day".

For truth! I bought my 8.5 Griz for a truck/camp gun and plan to use it as such. I just don't understand how we have gotten to the point where a lot of law abiding people (including myself) are nervous about enjoying/using/carrying firearms in perfectly legal ways. I'm only 46 but gowing up in central Alberta almost every truck had a rack in the back window with a rile and either a cattle prod or a curling broom on it. I remember parking downtown many times with my father or grandfather leaning over the tuck box talking to our local RCMP staff Sargent about the crops or cattle prices etc. Now I spend almost as much time teaching my daughters not to be ashamed of their interest in shooting and guns and how as I do on safe practices and handling. Along with this comes the 'Police Officers are your friends (which is what I was taught) to MOST Police Offiercs are your friends but not all Police Officers like people to own guns and not ALL Police Officers know all the rules about guns and we have to be careful even though we are not breaking the law..........

It's sad really.

I agree totally!

You and I are similar ages and I'm happy to say, as you I am educating my child about firearms and will soon be taking him to the range. If we all educate and increase our kids understanding about firearms then we all get stronger then maybe some day retarded ####ing ####s like Councellor Adam Vaughan in Toronto will #### off and die and not impede the progress of shooting sports in Canada...

OK, serenity now...

Cheers,

Marty

I was always under the impression that if the gun wasn't loaded and the lock was on you couldn't be charged with having a concealed weapon......

I could be wrong though.....that would truly suck:(
