Im curious....where are guys getting their gun prices from?

I have made corrections in my own pricing if my initial price was out of whack. I have made errors.

Are guys checking their gun prices on the Internet, in US funds, and asking the same in Canadian funds?

I know that others have noticed too, because not much has changed in the Exchange forum lately (as far as seeing SPF, I'd say it has declined somewhat)

I suppose if a fella wants to spend more than what a gun is worth, that's up to him.....but are we pricing ourselves out of a sale? Or setting a price so high that guys are laughing rather than sending "pm's" or making an offer?

What do you guys think? Just something I've noticed lately and thought I'd start a thread.

and NO, I'm not dropping my prices cause mine are just right....

The market will dictate prices, but also being close to deer season raises prices a little as availability becomes scarce at gunshops.

Maybe I shouldn't say anything because I'm not in the market for anything right now, but looking at the prices some ask for a sporterized military rifle, I just shake my head.

I mean, it isn't a collector any more (if it ever was) because of what's been done to it, it is now a basic shooter, often worth maybe $125 or $150, so why ask $300?

It isn't just here. There's an ad circulating elsewhere for a Savage 110 with a Bushnell scope for $2800. That ad's been appearing for weeks if not months now in a regularly circulating publication.

I think a lot of the prices are a little high, and I can see posting a higher price for the first week just in case someone really wants it, but then after a week of no sale then a price drop is warrented. there are a few adds that have been btt'ed for about a month with no price changes

I also don't even bother with the make me an offer or OBO listings, I think that if you ask for a price then thats the price, If your going to accept a lower price then change the post.

I think most of the guys are just ..... guys! They're just selling a gun and are not marketers or business people, nor do they think like them. And of course a lot of people think their stuff is worth more than it is.

I also think it is interesting to observe how people write and design their ads. Some are brutally written and laid out. Hard to read. Others have excellent pics and are worded just right. They seem to have the best success rate.

Well, I see what you mean.

Alot of prices are a little bit out of range, but alot of people, myself included, don't NEED to sell off guns, so they put it up for sale at a given price and if it sells it sells, if not it sits in the safe. I tend to base prices on the US Blue Book and for the most part, it is pretty accurate when determining value.

However, I mean it when I say OBO. One example is a Remington 760 I had for sale with scope and a bunch of accessories. I was asking $500 OBO and accepted $325 for just the gun. I wanted to move it and accepted the first reasonable offer I got. Obvioulsy, OBO offer really means or best RESONABLE offer.

one thing I have found is that when ads are combined it is hard to tell when there is something new. I still think that if you sell all the items in your original post you start a new post for new items. this way you can tell what you havent seen. if you add to your original post and change the header then you still have all the replies and views noted so it looks old and can be overlooked.

The out of whack prices are true on all of the forums. When I see a guy asking darn near the new price for a gun that he has put hundreds or thousands of rounds through, I just laugh at it. Why would I bother buying a gun on here for $900 if I can buy it brand new and look at it ahead of time for $1,000? You'd have to be offering me substantial savings before I'd buy a used firearm on here, which most guys don't bother doing. They drop it by 10% and figure it is going to sell, then when it doesn't they wonder why.

When I sold a pistol I sold it for $900 when to buy it new with the extra mags it would have cost darn near $1500. BUT, I knew I would have to offer substantial savings before someone would spend that kind of coin. It sold in 2 weeks with one price drop (to the $900).

I doubt anyone is offered their asking price unless it is a steal. In fact, I think lots of folks like "low-balling".

X2

I'm looking for a deal when I look in the x-xhange forums not a rifle marked down $100 less than retail. I mean I can talk the guys at epps into almost a hundred dollars of extras if I buy it new there, so thats what I usually do.

I have sold a couple here because I wanted to move them and get something else not because I wanted to make some money off them. (wich I didnt). I guess thats why they went in the first day or 2 of being posted.

Yeah, gun shows are great for that. Most people don't really want to sell their stuff (I think), they just want to "have things for sale".

I've gotten a few good deals here on CGN, but most of the stuff I just shake my head....

I have sold lots of guns here and got what I wanted and everyone went away happy......that's because I wanted to part with some of my guns and I accepted what I thought was fair and yet someone got a good deal.

but I agree that if you bought the gun for $1000, shot it and used it and then try to sell it for $950, well..........chances are your email wont be full when you get home

Motivation of the seller is also part of it.

I've never had to sell a gun because I needed to make a mortgage payment or put gas int he truck. :D

I've been selling a pair of Miendal boots for 6 months now, the price is fair, but I'm not going to give them away for dirt cheap, since I don't really need the money.

Actually, I should go BTT my Cioris for sale. I still like them, so I'm not going to give them away for dirt cheap, but the price is fair. :D

I always put OBO because maynbe someone has a trade I want, or maybe I'll accept different terms (shipping costs etc) or maybe I'll sell for what is offered. It's called negotiation. :D

Another thing I have noticed is that a few people seem to base their selling prices on what their local Mom & Pop Gun-shop/Hardware store try and sell their goods for.

I have seen several: "I just paid $1200.00 for this fine piece of merchandize and it can now be yours for the low-low price of $1000.00." Never mind that the same item is sold elsewhere for $800.00 new.

I've seen your Cioris and was wondering what you were thinking when you put them up on the ee forum,

Woodchopper: If you recall, Clark won the scotch using his pump shotgun... he doesn't NEED those fancy o/u's anymore!

Oh and by the way, 'Boo should buy them both, since we never let him use his goose gun at the trap range!

Fancy shooting irons there. If I get out to Haggisfest III I'll bring my 20" Win Mod12.

I usually take a quick look at SIR or Wholesale sports for new prices, Used rifles should be cheap, and scopes are just a bonus

Wanna talk about over priced guns and stuff, I went to the Ancaster gun show on the weekend. I've never seen so much over priced junk??!!
Depends what you are looking for. I walked away with a very desireable .22 that I've been watching for, only the second one I've ever seen (I bought the other one as well) for a great deal. I could double my money in a few minutes.

At Woodstock the week before I got a Lee Enfield .22 trainer and a German pre-war Erma .22 trainer, both for what I think were great deals.
