Have you ever shot like this befor?

Not good form for precision and probably a good way to get a scope in the eye if you shoot anything bigger than a 308. Most of the "experts" say you want to be in line with the rifle to minimize felt recoil using your entire body to dissipate the recoil energy.
Whatever works though, if that's the only position you have available then having practiced it would be a good thing.
I think I'll pass on that one though.

clayne. nice shooting. position is way over rated and you prove a good point a good shooter can shoot regardless of semantics.
its the position of the rifle that counts not the position of the shooter.
ymmv means your mileage may vary

Here's a shooting position you should try. This is how precision shooters used to compete from what I understand.

That position was used at very long range when the rear sight became so high above the comb that the regular prone position was not practical. With flatter shooting cartridges this position fell by the wayside. That is my understanding of it anyway.

I believe I saw some old timers shooting this way in Bisley, England at 1200 yards in 1983. Not sure if they were using .308, .303 or something else.

Shabazz, I was thinking the same thing when I saw the first post. The early Creedmoor shooters used a few odd positions like that. I think in their case it was due to the rule that no artificial support was allowed, and the fact that the original rules stipulated light weight rifles. The recoil from a .45-110 in a 10 lb rifle is pretty stout.

Now and then I've heard of guys using the old positions in long range black powder target rifle competition, but pretty much everyone has gone to prone position as modern rules allow heavier rifles.

Twotone, some of the shooters moved the tang sight to the back of the butt stock, very odd looking indeed.

Chris.

Yup, but no mat was involved lol, shooting positions on your side is usually an indication that you need to stay low and your cover is only a few feet high, that being said your recreational shooter does not have bullets coming towards him, so there would be no need for this kind of shooting unless someone is trying to kill you and you are pinned down.
