Having a Hard Time Choosing...

Hey guys and gals.

I currently have a Cooey model 64 .22 that I use for "plinking" and I am wanting to replace it with a AR ish style, non restricted .22.

Now I have read, and read, and read, and READ about a lot of firearms, and my options are...

A 249 dollar 10-22, then going and buying a archangel kit from somewhere, like mystic precision. Dollar value thats 425ish.

Second option is the Ruger sr-22 for 569 ish from a place like Cabelas.

Third option is the new Mossberg, and i believe those are 269, if they aren't all sold out!

Last option is a Remington vtr 597. Now I have a friend that says he can get me a great deal on this rifle and I could get it for about 250 (Cabelas price is 400)
Ive looked at buying a used rifle, but it seems like most people are asking very slightly under new prices for their used rifles, so I figure I might as well spend the extra 50ish bucks on whatever I buy, and get it new.

Now I use my .22 a fair bit (like most other guys) for shooting varmits that come into my farm yard, some recreational target shooting, and just in general "plinking"
Im not much into modding rifles (I have vehicles that eat up all that extra modding cash!) and if possible would just like a open sight, accurate, reliable rifle, and the best value for my dollar (I would be willing to put a few bucks into it)

That being said I am starting to lean towards the 597, due to the fact I have a friend that can get me one for cheap, but know the Ruger's reputation, and availability of parts, and also see that a lot of fellas on here as well love their Mossberg's.

Ive also read a ton of info at rimfire central, but I find its hard to find someone that has experience with each different rifle, and most guys there seem to base their opinions on "since I own <insert brand here> its better then <insert another brand here>", and Im really hoping for some unbiased, knowledgeable information!

Thoughts, opinions, suggestions all welcome!
 
I have 2 heavily modded 10/22's, an Anshutz SS sniper gun and the new Mossberg Tactical and I love them all. IMHO the Mossberg is the best cheap AR looking .22 out there, mine has functioned flawlessly for over 1000rds now, it is fairly accurate,1/2-3/4" @ 50yds with AE 40gr, has decent open sights and high cap mags are on the way. I have shot a couple of 597's and they were OK but nothing special, equivalent triggers to the Mossberg, didn't look as tacti-cool but still a good gun. I have never tried a SR-22 so I have no opinion on those. I vote Mossberg.

Edit: I guess the Mossberg is non-rest. :p

I've never shot the Rem597 so I cannot attest to the reliability of it. But I have read reviews that would lead me to believe that is an alright buy.

I own a SR22 and after working out the extractor issue, I haven't has any problems with it since. I feel that buying one instead of buying the base model (10/22) and then the ArchAngel or Nordic kit would just save you time and maybe money. The only problem with the SR is that it does not come with open sights when you get it, you have to buy them separately or get yourself a scope or red dot.
 
10-22 based is the way to go, IMO.

No other platform offers as many options for changing the looks or as many magazine options.

I currently own a VTR. I haven't shot it yet (maybe this afternoon?) but I can tell you what I have found so far. The rifle is very heavy. It's frame is all metal, probably aluminum. The fore end is a totally floating, all metal tube with flutes milled in for grip. The barrel is a heavy contour, varmint style of about 16 inches. The trigger and reciever are stock 597. The butt stock appears to be an actual AR butt with a cleaning kit storage compartment in the stock. (Mine is the A2, non telescopic type) and the pistol grip also appears to be a standard AR grip.

Everything is solid, with no loose or wobbley components. The metal sideplates are held in place with four pan head, allen keyed screws per side. The muzzle has a recessed crown and everything is either matte blued or what appears to be anodized black. The mount is a Picatinny style, and it has sling swivel studs installed. The bolt has some type of coating. It looks lumpy but I read somewhere it's supposed to be a lubricated coating. It came with a couple 30 round magazines, but it feels better with the factory 10 shot. Once I get it out I'll see how reliable it feeds but I'm sure accuracy will be fine. As much as I like the look and the cost of the new Mossberg, I too would have to cast my vote for a stock 10/22 and then after-market it up.

I have one and couldn't be happier with it. Best of all, it kinda like having two guns in one. When I feel like "tacti-cooling" it up, it looks like this:

I'm a big fan of my 597, it's not VTR but they are basically the same inside I think.

AR Style, the Mossberg is great, smashed a few hundy through mine first time out. Pretty accurate and nice to shoot.

I was really leaning towards the Mossberg, just due to the price, but I do like the idea of having a firearm that has a bit of weight to it.

So many options... makes me wish I could justify having one of each!

People keep chiming in, the more info I read, the better!
 
You can have one each! If your into aftermarket parts the 10/22 i king but that mossberg is so much nicer to look at and the price is great.
