Having some trouble choosing 40 S&W or 9mm or 45ACP

Get a .22 and a .45 and you'll have two accurate calibers and many models of handguns to choose from as you can see from this forum.. If you run into a financial drought, the .22 will give you a lot of mileage. If I were starting again, that's what I'd do. But history shows I'd just end up buying more guns of each caliber. It's a terrible disease. Beware that you might not be able to restrain your purchases.

I bought two 1911s,one in 22,and one in 45.The 22 is cheap to shoot, but I am actually more accurate with the 45.I just started reloading for the 45 which cuts the cost to about 1/2 of factory loads. All that I have to buy is bullets, primers and powder, because I am able to pick up once fired cases left at the range by people that don't reload.

Well as for reloading I'm all setup and currently reload many calibers for my large collection of hunting rifles. So I'm going to head down to the range and fire for the 40 S&W and the 45ACP and see if the recoil of the 45ACP bothers me. If not I'll come home with and start the look for my Springfield Arms 1911. If it does bother me I'll get a Glock 22 in 40 S&W if neither bother me maybe I'll just go and buy both :) Then my wife can shoot the 40 S&W and I can shoot the 45ACP and shoot the 40 S&W when I want. Thanks again guys

9mm if you don't plan on reloading

40S&W or 45ACP is you plan on reloading - I'd go .40S&W between the two

Go .45ACP if you plan on reloading .45acp+ or .45super :)

45ACP is great for a first gun. Make sure to get "230 grain +P" ammo if you go with the 45, this will help you control your shot groups nicely and tightly.

As for 9mm/.40 - You are much better off going with .357SIG or 10mm AUTO for a first pistol. These "friendly" loads won't be as hard on the wrists and you'll gain the admiration of your fellow rangers. Oh and don't worry about the money, it's always worth the couple of extra bucks.

Don't be penny wise and pound foolish.

Cheers! And good luck!

Well, I think I am going to go with the Glock 17 (9 mm). This is my reasoning...

1. Ammo prices
2. Ammo availability
3. Overall ammo/weapon weight
4. Manageable recoil/quicker follow-up shots
5. Size of weapon grip/comfortable to hold
6. New expansion ammo for increased stopping power in a SHTF scenario
7. Glock is most reliable in the caliber it was originally designed for (9 mm)
8. My wife won't be scared to shoot it

Am I forgetting anything? Is this acceptable logic or am I crazy?
You need a G20:cool::D

When it comes to pistols DON"T buy what others guys shoot. Buy what YOU like, what fits YOUR hand best and YOUR budget. The Glocks are great guns but I went with the M&P 9MM only because of the grip. I just didn't like it.

I shoot two of the action sports and I find I drive the M&P faster due to it's weight but shoot as accurately and as fast with my 1911's in 9MM and .45acp. Day in and day out I go with my .40cal Tanfoglio cuz I like the gun and it is just as fast as the others. IF we were allowed to carry I would shoot IDPA with my .45acp Commander but we can't, so I don't.

Take Care

Bob

i went 9mm for my first mainly because of the cost.... .40 generates alot more kick and is slightly more expensive....45 auto is a blast to shoot but it will kill your wallet if you dont reload.

People say to start with the 9mm but does anybody else find .45 recoil to be more manageable? The way it recoils ?
