I went into my local gun store today to check out scopes and the guy showed me a Hawke scope. He said it's a good budget scope (i'm looking to spend around $150+tax max) and they have a lifetime guarantee. It was the sport HD with the illuminated mil-dot reticle. i've never heard of them before so looking to get some input.

I was also thinking about a Bushnell trophy XLT with the DOA recticle.

I'm just getting my first gun (probably savage mk2 or 93F not sure yet) and it'll mainly be used for targets, although eventually i'd like to get a .270 (for hunting/targets) and i'd like to have a decent scope to transfer to it.

let me know what you think.

I have a Hawke Sidewinder 30 tactical 6.5 to 20 power and love it. The cross hairs are very fine, the brightness is good, the 1/2 mildot is great, and the tactical knob adjustments are accurate.

I typically take one shot per steel target starting at 100, 300, 385, and 500 meters. I use the knob adjustments on each of these ranges and then drop back to 100 and the point of impact has not visibly changed.

If the one you are looking at does not have the tactical knobs then you would use the mildots for longer range shooting. Either way you will be happy with the scope.

I would definetly buy another Hawke for the next target rifle.
