Hawken Prices?

Just wondering if anyone out in GunLand can give me a rough idea of a price for an ancient Hawken .50 cal. in VG+ condition. An old guy I know has one on the wall and I'd like to make him a fair offer for it.

You should do what BCRider says but I have to ask - is it truly ancient? As in old, original 19th century Hawken rifle? If so, especially if it is in VG+ condition then that is a museum piece worth a LOT of money!

Does it have any maker's name on it?

Things to look for:
Is it ancient, as Pete asked? i.e. 19th century? or is it a reproduction half-stock?
If it's newer, is it hand-made (valuable) or mass-produced? In either case, who made it?

x3 pictures are critcial.

But not necessarily worth a fortune. As noted above it comes down to the variables including age; condition; completeness; and who made it (if known) - or where (if known). And any provenance!

19th Century Hawken-style rifles can go for well under or well over a grand (into the stratosphere) depending on the variables; check out the auctions, Track of the Wolf (antique firearms selection) and even the EE here, just for starters. Flayderman's Guide to Antique Firearms is another suggested reference.

Thank you for the tips! :)

No problem - good luck on the search! Track had a few of that style listed over the last year:

Now only one with a sale pending. But you can get the idea from the longrifle prices.

I have seen a couple others very recently for the 900-1300 range but for the life of me I can't find them.

Recently sold a piece with modern stock, lock and trigger set set around an ORIGINAL S. HAWKEN barrel for 1500- to a US collector. All info was given to him and the barrel was the deal. A "pure" Hawken in reasonable condition should be in the 12-15000- range. Other name builders will command less even tho' they made Hawken style guns.
