I didn't mean bedding the barrel it should be free floated, but having the action secured firmly should help. then it's Ammo & shooter is by any chance your bolt dragging the bullets making contact before chambering & deforming the lead, this was an issue with some 10/22's?

Interesting, I have not noticed any lead deposits. Are you aware of a thread on CGN or RFC that goes into detail on this issue?

I think langbanger & WayUpNorth talked about the issue and it was the bolt that was causing the issue. but it was very obvious.

It was the dlask bolt that was causing the issues. I rounded off the feeding lip on the bolt and it works flawlessly now. It was very sharp. scraped the brass and took gouges out of the projectile.
