If you actually shot a 12ga in a hallway, no matter the barrel length, you're probably going to be deaf, or temporarily deafened with hearing loss. The pressure and db levels are too high without hearing protection in close quarters. Something to think about.

Note to self, hang hearing protection next to my shotgun in the vault. ;)

12 gauge 870 pump 18" barrel threaded for choke with Paradigm Gator Shot Spreader from GP Tactical, PVC shot from SFRC... Bear Defence indoors & out. My 2 cents... Or should I round that up to five ?

Plus, the sound of a slide racking.....

That is the dumbest MYTH ever. You as a gun owner know what a shotgun slide racking sounds like, those who are not very familiar with firearms have no clue, heck the intruder might even think he is hearing the furnace clicking and turning on. :)

And he may get startled and shoot if he is armed.

Barrel length under 18.5", 12gauge, heavy game load or bird shot if you're worried about collateral damage (apartment walls, other people sleeping in the house) if all alone in the country might want to use a 00buck load, shotgun should have a rail to attach a light ( might want to see what you're not allowed to shoot), most importantly make sure that you shoot it regularly, train with it, shut the lights off and manipulate it. My 12.5 grizzly would be my go to in a perfect world :)
