He he he...love it/hate it gun and cartridge combo.... my new "one gun for all"

I figure this will stir some conversation :) I was looking for a bear/moose/deer combo gun, and decided to go with a hotly debated rifle in a hotly debated cartridge :D Love it or hate it, there seems to be strong opinions on both sides. This was a gun that I just happened upon while surfing the new posts....Prophet River had it in their HUGE list of guns for sale :D

Add to the short gun and "new cartridge" discussion that that the rifle is the only one I've ever seen in this configuration from the factory, and there's even more to talk about.

It's a Ruger Frontier (16" barrel, forward mount removed), but it is in the slimmer/checkered "compact" stock, and it's chambered in .338 Federal. Scope is a 2.5-8X36 VX III also from Prophet River.

So: What do you think? Great rifle/great cartridge? Great rifle/crappy cartridge? Vice-versa? Discuss :D

Nice looking gun, and should be nice to handle as well. You chose a great scope and an adequate cartridge.

Good choice.

Looks like a great "one-gun-for-all" package. The Ruger is a good quality production rifle and the VX III is a decent scope. The 338-08 is a sweet little cartridge and is fully capable of fulfilling your needs.

I personally would need to add a 1 or 2 inch spacer under the butt pad due to my long arms but I could easily hunt with that rig and not feel "under-gunned".

Should do the trick for you. IMO, that rig would be perfect with a 20" barrel...:)
X2 Those are words of experience. I have Win mod 88 in 358 Win with 20" barrel, total weight with laminate stock, light 2-3/4x scope, nylon sling, ready to hunt is 8lbs. I wouldn't like it any lighter or shorter! Full power loads with 250gr bullets are still plenty to handle, your light and short rifle is going to be quite a boomer.

Barrel too short. Should be 20-22"

.

And my beretta extrema should have at least a 28" barrel too...right? :D (It has a 24)

C'mon guys, there was thread after thread about the frontier when it came out....and the same when the 338 fed emerged....I figured there would be a little more discourse than this :D

And for the record? I LOVE short barrels for hunting up here. Nothing like an extra 4-10" of barrel to piss you off trying to bust through cedar bottoms or climbing granite cliffs in the boreal. ;)

Nope, my 870 has a 26" bbl. 24" would be good too.

Discourse! You want discourse?

Well you shoulda gone with a 22" 358Winchester instead of that 338Wannabe!

How's that for discourse? ;)

I like short bbls too, but IMHO 16" is too short. Nuthin personal. :p

I've got a Ruger Compact, same stock, in .308 witha 2-7x VXI. So I'd have to gives two thumbs up to your combo there. Though I'm not personally familiar with the 338 so I can't comment on that. Barrel is not too short IMO, not sure why people always bring that up. I guess because it's so different than the 'norm'.
