He he he...love it/hate it gun and cartridge combo.... my new "one gun for all"

hard to beat a 2.5-8x36! great all purpose scope IMO

sounds like its a sweet shooter WW, that Fusion ammo shot great in my Sako 338F, 2600ish FPS IIRC

Where you able to take the 1/4 rib off yourself or did you take it to a gunsmith?

Any tips for others who might want to remove that scout mount?

It's not tough to remove, but does require some "kinetic persuesion"...at least mine did.

To remove the rib:

There are the screws holding it on (obvious :) ) as well as two pins. Remove the screws first, but be forewarned: They were loctited all to crap. Carefull not to strip the heads.

The pins were a bit of a mystery...once you remove the screws and pull the mount off (pull straight up) they will be left sticking out of the barrel...and seem like they are permanent. I gave them a wrap with tape to protect them (unless I ever want to re-mount the rib) and grabbed the base of each pin with a pair of vice grips then gave the barrel a quick tap down with a leather mallet while holding the VG's. They are just friction fit into holes in the barrel, but the fit is tight.

Cheers,

WW

One other thing: You WILL need at least one different scope ring if you want to mount your scope in the traditional position. The scout mount uses two rings the same height, but the reciver mounts require a higher ring in the back. I used one of the "low" rings that came with the gun in the front, and a "Med" in the back....and actually sourcing the single ring in the stainless finish was a PITA.

I know for a fact that Prophet River now has a few single rings in stock for this purpose though :)

That should work, the cartridge is a sensible for big game and if the rifle proves to be as good as the 77's I've had the pleasure to shoot, it is without complaint. I prefer the look of a smaller scope on such a small rifle and had it been me I'd have gone with a Leupold EER, but I recognise they aren't for everyone and a 2.5-8X has great versatility.

I load the 338F for a bud. With the 210partitions it should be good for lots of what you want to shoot at. Ill bet the round does not loose more than 20fps per inch of barrel, it isnt an overbore 300something thats going to loose a whole lot more. Mr Moose will not know the difference anyhoo.

I think its a great combo strong gun,,strong fail safe action..! would make a great Bear gun in this flat thick province in that cartridge, deer, moose as well. What does is the Lbs...all in with the scope..and how was the recoil, not that i mind recoil...just wondering.

Be nice to have one in a 308! for deer with a 1x5 VX on it. hummm maybe...

Any chronograph results I have seen in rifles using slower burning powder the velocity loss is more on the order of 45 fps per inch of barrel lost. It's a nice gun but in my opinion you wouldn't be losing that much in portability to have a 20 inch tube.
Must be LOUD.

Should be nice and handy. Personally I would have mounted a EER scope and installed irons on the front (maybe even a NECG Masterpiece banded front sight) and an NECG peep in the rear scope dovetails. Perfect medium-bore scout rifle.
