:eek Well. i finally found the ideal rifle that i was looking for to buy for Haggis Jnrs first hunting rifle.
It is used, but in 'Pristine' condition and what is really amazing is that it's the identical rifle to mine, a Tikka 'Whitetail' in wood/blue in left hand bolt 308 cal. (mine is R/H in 270)
It came with a leupold compact 3-9x40 and he loves it.
Last weekend while in the 'Cariboo' he actually put 3 shots inside of 0.5" @ 100 yds and 2 of them were actually touching to make a figure 8.
Looking forward to seeing him try it out again, and getting lots of practice, practice and more practice, and especially to go hunting some day for his first time,

"...getting lots of practice..." Off hand using a 9" pie plate at 100 yards. When he can hit it every time, he's ready to hunt.

I can;t hit a pieplate every time offhand @ 100yrds. i'm a ####ty offhand shot. guess all the animals I've killed were only faking it. funny, never needed more then one shot.....

Umm, with 150gn bullets it's probably a little lighter on the shoulder.
It's a good all round cartridge.
If you can handle 270 you can definitely handle a 308.
Ammo is cheaper.
Ummm, have I missed anything?
Oh, yeah it uses less powder and it's a short action cartridge, which according to a couple of forum members makes it godlike. :p
 
Nice choice for a first rifle. The main thing is he can handle it and shoot it well. And it's obvious he can. And he will believe it's magic, but it's really because he knows how to use it. That's the magic.

Over at Chuckhawks.com, his Rifle Recoil Table shows the .270 with 150gr to produce 17 ft.lbs, and a .308 150gr to produce 15.8 ft.lbs. The .270 was an 8 lbs gun, while the .308 was 7.5.

In Remington loads, Wholesale Sports was showing .270 at $23.99 & 37.99 and .308 at $23.99.

My 48th Edition Lyman, most accurate load for .270 150gr was 50gr of N160, while the .308 150gr was 48 gr of H-380 and was 19fps faster.

I can't see how this makes either cartridge a better choice.

That's exactly why i bought it,(not to mention he is left handed and this is left handed), try to find your exact (used)rifle in L/H in 'pristine condition The 'Hunting Gods' were smiling on us i think.
Anyways,both rifles are the same and the felt recoil definately was less than mine, he was shooting 150gr hollow points and i 140 gr in my 270.
The ammo BTW i was able to buy for $13.99 / box on sale, needless to say i bought more than one box.

We can always count on him. :D
But the fact remains that I was right, even if it was in minimal amounts.
And if you're a young guy who loves banging off rounds every little amount of saving in powder and recoil counts.
Plus it actually goes FASTER for less powder, although that has to do with bore diameter.
But that's not counting the very inexpensive 308 mil-surp ammo available from time to time.
No one ever used 270 Win as military cartridge...... ;)

I just have a hard time seeing where 1.2 pounds of recoil, 2 grains of powder, 19 fps and near identical prices in factory ammo clearly make a .308 the better cartridge.
I've got no problem with a .308. Don't get me wrong, it's a proven round. I love my .270 and perhaps that makes me biased. In fact, it probably does. I try to keep that in check.
I'm sure I'd pick up cheap milsurp ammo if they had it in .270, but in no means would I rely on it for hunting.
I'm a young fella myself, and I love bangin off rounds too, when the important parts are done. It's not too bad with the .270, but when I start in with my Whelan. At $40 bucks a box (sure, not the most expensive) can really start to hurt a guys wallet. But I wouldn't do it if I couldn't afford it.
I guess what I'm just trying to say is that when someone says 'X gun/cartridge is better than Y gun/cartridge' I just want to know why. It's all fine and dandy to have an opinion, but having a logical reason behind that opinion is rather important. Should that not be so?
Anyway, I think I've gone on long enough. I applaud haggisbasher for getting Jr. in to shooting and not going for one of those fancy new dangled rounds everyone seems to be slobbering over. I hope he has good luck on his hunts.

my new primary rifle is a Mod 7 SS .308. great round. I still miss my .270, but for the size, weight, cost and availability of factory ammo, load data, bullet choices..... (the list could go on for hours) the .308 becomes a more practical rifle for those that hunt big game that doesn;t include yukon moose, Grizzle bear, or bison.

congrats on the new boom stick.
 
How old is Jr Haggisbasher? congrats on getting your wee lad into the sport of shooosssting and hopefully hunting one day like you said ... ;)

Perhaps i should sell my Tikka 270 for another 308 :D
Jnr is 15 years old, a great shot,extremely high on safety etc. and now we have his friends coming with us when we go the the cabin and they are totally getting into shooting as well.
We have no less than 6 (or more)of his friends that enjoy shooing,target and clays whom all had never even handled a gun before coimg up with us, and they are all good shots and very good at clays, all shooting 20g with fixed chokes non the less,haven't told them about changeable chokes in 12 yet;)
I stand them 3 kids at a time, each with a 20g O/U with me behind them, and i now have them doing various fun games in competition with each other, and they are all good shots, so they have great fun and the competition can often get exciting.
We have often played 'Annie Oakley' and for those of you who have played this game know how much fun it is and really hones your shooting skills,especially when the first 2 shooters miss and the 3rd shooter has to hit that clay which, by this time, can be way out there.
In fact, i had Scott shooting his new 308 in competion with his buddy useing my 270 at 100 yds. Great fun
 
Good work, Haggisbasher.
Anyone introducing sport shooting to kids with the idea that they are excellent to develop hand eye coordination and are not "EVIL" is doing his part for the future of the sport IMO.
And I expect to see some pics of HB Jnr's first game taken with the 308. :)

BTW, for the record, cooleyc, 308 Win leaves me dead and I find it exceptionally boring.
What matters is that my guestimations about the less and more of these cartridges were right! :D

thats exactly why I bought one. it is so boring and practical I'm hoping it will leave me without an excuse to buy simmilar more interesting rifles, thus saving my bank account. this "going back to school" thing is really killing my disposable income.....:(
