Head lamps?

I have an old Boruit headlamp. It's brighter than the lights on the ATV.

BUT

It sticks out in front of your head about 2.5" with 3 separate LED lamps 2 small, one large, and has a massive battery pack on the back that takes non standard rechargeable batteries. The batteries will go dead just sitting in the headlight, if I don't tape over the terminals when not in use.
It's been a great light, but be aware of the size, and weight of what you choose.

Gutting an animal in the dark with a regular flashlight and a very sharp knife, makes you count your fingers when you are done. If your knife is sharp enough, you can cut yourself and not even feel it.

Any headlight makes the job much less dangerous.

I have 2 Fenix head lamps, one around 900 (with a 2nd small red LED) the other claims combined 1600 lumens if both wide and focussed LEDs are on.

One field practical thing is where is the battery on the lamp? One of them (1600 lumen) the battery is in the lamp housing and the other the battery is in a separate case on the back of the head harness.

I find the battery case on the back is better balanced AND in cold weather the battery stays warmer and lasts longer under my parka hood.

I keep a spare 18650 battery in a plastic case with me.

To round this off, in post 78 I was beatching about the MEC hastily selling me a mint looking but clearly returned Swift RL unit and today I finished off my plan to order a new one online and return the used one at the store as I picked it up, all at the 'black Friday' sale price which is ended now. That worked beautifully, the MEC customer service was quite cheerful about it, much like the old days. The long ordeal is over, LOL.

I guess it depends on your usage and how much power you need. I have a Thrunite TH30 V2 which uses an 1860 battery, produces a wide beam for great surrounding illumination and 3,320 ANSI rated lumens on turbo and 0.3 lumens on firefly mode, six modes in total.

I also have a Thrunite TH30 V2 LED Rechargeable Headlamp (here) which is pretty good for under-the-truck maintenance, but I got that several years ago and it's no longer available. I have spare batteries for it, and a charger.

Recently I bought a
OLIGHT Baton4 EDC Small Pocket Flashlight 1300 Lumens, LED Rechargeable
https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0CHMCYQFV

Has a replicable rechargeable battery. It's a 16340 3.6V 650 mAh 2.34Wh -- lots available with higher mAh ratings)
Clips reliably/strongly onto my baseball cap visor.
Certainly good for walking in the woods.
I'm not fond of button versions but this one has a "push for 2 seconds" to lock it off that might keep it from turning on by itself in my pocket.

I saw it reviewed here, and bought one:

For cap brim carry, as well as clipping to most any other part of your of clothing (lapel, front pocket) without blinding you. I can recommend the small and lightweight Streamlight 61126 ClipMate 70-Lumen USB Rechargeable, sold in tac stores and currently selling for a bit off on Amazon. It's quite lightweight and has a long runtime with a very secure clip, the only drawback being that it won't accept other batteries. Its big advantage is the gooseneck feature, puts two different levels of nice soft white or red light right where you want.

So, as already explained and b.itched about, having been stuck with a second one of these lights by Amazon (and badly wounding my faith in them), I stuck one in my winter parka and had it there during the longish night time drives I was doing around Christmas when it occurred to me that it would be the perfect light to clip to the visor of my vehicle for use as a utility light, the only problem being that the material of the visor is rather too thick and if forced on would likely take the spring out of the clip. I'll have to work something out but as I say the output of one of these is perfect for finding things in the dark as you're driving. Or even reading maps, if anyone still does that.

went to the abbotsford cabelas for boxing day hoping for some deals on reloading tools/accessories and a new headlamp. I was extremely underwhelmed by thier sale overall as nothing i was shopping for was sale priced. We walked out after spending a whopping 120 bucks LOL
I was looking for a new headlamp as the first thing on my list. All they had was blister pack junk and only one Black Diamond AAA battery powered unit. The selection was picked thin and no stock of any others except the junk off shore brand stuff. So I grabbed the black diamond at full price(45.99) and moved on. It's a simple Cosmo model but it will be perfect for my needs. Nice and light and will also run on a BD1500 lithium ion if i buy that battery and associated charger.

I have had a Peax headlamp with red and white LEDs for at least two years now and it has been amazing. Great battery life, very bright (three intensity modes in both colours), and good rugged build quality.

I use an olight perun, very bright if you need it, can be used more like a normal light or attached to a bag strap, red light setting is useful when setting up before the sun comes up.

Did you ever find that special light with the simple on-off switch that you were seeking at one time?

Agreed. I have Fenix, nitecore and zebralight and zebralight feels premium. It does come with a premium price tag however. With LED tech being what it is now, it's hard to justify those prices when one can buy 4 sofirn lights for the same price and just as powerful..

Well, I have been pretty stuck on my two zebra lights for quite a few years, probably ten. Both are single AA battery lights and have never let me down.

Well I got a present today from Littleboylefty, the Fenix HM50R. I have to admit, this headlamp is pretty sweet! We did a few side by side comparisons with my main Zebra light and a few others. Brighter than my main Zebra light and a nicer pattern for the beam and further distance. Similar quality from what I can tell so far. Although I only have a few hours with it, this might be my new favourite! The Zebra lights being single AA is how I wanted them, the Fenix is a rechargeable 800mAh battery, not sure how that compares? I can buy another Fenix battery for $21 Canadian if I want.

I’m pretty impressed with this Fenix! I guess time will tell but right now I think I’m sold. Time to eat some crow and say the new technology is getting quite amazing! Especially now that charging systems are getting much more compatible.

My Zebras aren’t going anywhere, still great lights but this one I think has them beat as my new main headlamp.

Thanks LBL! Now I got only a short time to find you something cooler for your B day! 😜

I'm running 18650 and AA lights these days with intermittent thumb cap buttons.

My headlamps are mainly for field work.

I keep a couple 18650 lights in Fenix spring clamp picatinny mounts so I can grab them and clamp them onto whichever long gun I need.

Most of my social rifles have pic rails for lights. Some just bubbaed on with screws, plastic wedges to make the rail parallel to the bore and epoxy. Function over form.

I have one 18650 Olight in a spring mount. It's only 800 lumens and floody but it has an IR led so I can run it with my NOD and IR laser.

Because bad 5hit usually happens in the dark and only idiots fight fair.

I use a Petzl or an energizer headlamp every single evening when doing chores...The Petzl is a little brighter and has a blinking red option that comes in handy when hauling a load of hay home in the dark...I tie the headlamp to the back of the hay wagon and feel a lot better about things behind me.

I've seen the Energizer on sale at the hardware store for as little as 10 bucks...Buy a whack of them and store them everywhere they can be worth their weight in gold in dark situations.

Tried a pair of LHKNL headlamps from Amaz, cheap and rechargeable is the only pro
Hate the switch as you have to run through all 6 options every time
plus it has a Motion-Detection option!, that so far is a PITA! off or on at the wrong times, not sure who would benefit from that

Still super impressed with this light. My new favourite by far! Been using this daily for a few weeks now. I’m super impressed. Add one more spare battery and this will ride in my kill kit for a long time I’m guessing.

Thanks again LBL!

I have a Petzl NAO rechargeable with an auto-dimming feature that keeps you from getting blinded by reflected light when you get too close to something.
