Has anybody tested the headspacing on the 2009 batch of Polytechs yet?
yes, nearing 50 so far since april and the average headspace measurements of the new polytechs and norincos that are coming in with the plastic stocks have been 1.6380" ..... in translation .... this is fantastic, especially for those using commercial spec ammo or reloading those cases. I am not a reloading expert so won't comment further on that side of things.
.308 Go is 1.6300" (the no go .308 guage is useless to us for these rifles)
Nato Match = 1.6345"
standard NATO Go = 1.635
so for chambers under 1.6345...... commercial spec loadings/sizing
for chambers exceeding 1.6440 i do not recommend use of commecial spec sizing/loads.
for chambers falling in the 1.6380" range...... you should be good for both kinds of ammo nato or commercial.
best tools to get..
an M14Doctor M14 bolt disassembly/assembly tool ( p.m. Gothmog)
a set of CLYMER headspace guages which run from 1.6300" up to 1.6440" (brownells)
a set of feeler guages from 1 thou up to 15 thou
avoid Forster headspace guages as thier consistancy to be innacurate is well known.
and avoid using modified headspace guages that are machined to be able to be used in a non stripped bolt.
Laz'z old guages were off by many thou and we measured a great many rifles at my clinic's with those guages. Most folks who were told they had 9 thou or more excess headspace using the Laz modified guages, in fact can take 3 and possibly 6 thou off those meadurements.
to get it right, you must disassemble the bolt , check for even lug bearing, then use a known to be accurate guage set. OR send Hungry some cases as his method gets it close enough for average Joe.
as for the orginal posters question about trigger jobs, I don't recommend a full trigger job at home unless you A) have lots of spare parts or B) have a tonne of experience adjusting and tuning 2 stage military triggers. ( i charge a nominal 75.00 for a civillian match tuned trigger job)
