Here is the story of our bear hunting weekend in WMU 46. We arrived on Fri afternoon and added fresh bait. We used dog kibble, bread, apples, and honey on the ground. In the bucket we added more bread, some water, powder sugar, molasses, and corn syrup. The weather was warm, and we soon began to be attacked by clouds of mosquitoes. There was no action on the bait, and we packed it in at 9pm. On Saturday we were set up at 7am (it was very weird driving out there in the daylight... as when we are there for deer we always show up in the dark). We checked the bait, and only some apples were missing. I saw raccoon tracks, so it looks like the coons had visited. There were no signs of bears. We added some honey and went to our position. The bugs started up again and as it got hotter they got worse. We went through a big can of bug spray over the weekend. Smokey was a no show. We had 4 does visit the bait site. 3 looked very healthy, and one was emaciated - you could count her ribs. Other animals we saw was a huge snapping turtle climbed on to a rock to get some sun, several grouse, raccoons hunting on the shore of the marsh, and a crow engaging in aerial combat with a huge raven - that was the first time either of us saw something like that. We knocked off at 5pm to get back in to town to get cleaned up and to take our hosts to dinner. While at the house a doe walked out beside me, crossed the road and proceeded to eat some tree leaves. We had our dinner and was up till about 2am shooting the breeze. On Sunday we woke up to a downpour. We went back out and again found the bait was not touched. We stayed till about noon and packed it in. We went back in to town and packed up to come home. On the was south on the 400 just south of Parry Sound a bracket came off another guys boat trailer and we hit it. It shredded the back passenger tire. We got the doughnut on and went back to Parry Sound Canadian Tire. There we found out that the garage is closed on Sundays.... the Canadian Tire staff were helpful and found us a guy who could put a new tire on a rim just south of the town. I bought a new tire and left to go see this guy. It was a very surreal experience. He was going on about the DNC staffers being murdered, Hillary Clinton being linked to organ trafficking in Kosovo, and how all the information is on youtube and twitter. It was bizarre to say the least! All in all I had a great weekend. The deer population looks excellent up there, I have a good feeling for the fall hunt. And of course, if smokey shows up during deer season I have a tag ready to go. I went out with my M305S, loaded with Hornady American Whitetail 150gn 308, with a M14.ca CASM and a Bushnell 3200 5-15X scope. Everything stayed rock solid. While we were waiting for a bear, I taught my friend how to use his mildot scope to estimate range. Now he has a new skill in his bag of tricks. As always, a day in the woods beats a day at work. Enjoy the photos.
Here you can see a doe standing under the tree. She walked across the street beside my friend's father in laws house (and less then 10' from me) and was eating the leaves.
It's important to replenish your fluids after being used as a blood bank for the mosquitoes....
