Heading to Alberta or Saskachewan this weekend for Gophers. Tips where to go?

Hey 500....even in Saskabush we know how to spell HEADING!!! Try around Swift Current or Maple Creek, Shaunavon, etc.

3 others and myself are leaving Edmonton tomorrow headed for Swift Current area for a 4 day gopher slaugther. gonna be a blast so to speak. :dancingbanana:

You don't need to know anyone! Stop at a municipal office. Buy a landowners map. Spot some gophers. Knock on the landowners door. Introduce yourself. give a business card or card of introduction with your name and contact information on it. Ask about cattle or other property of concern to the landowner. Be polite and ask nicely to shoot. Go shooting.
This isn't overcrowded suburbia, landowners mostly appreciate gopher shooters here!

I was very graciously treated by people in the Mankota area last Fall. The first fellow I spoke with took me right out to the field where he thought might be a good spot. I ended up shooting nearer to his brother's. The fellow made it very clear that I needed to be careful about fire - car exhaust and cigarettes (I don't smoke), and he said he wasn't interested in seeing any shooters drinking on the job (I don't drink). I still can't hardly comprehend the damage done by gophers down there. I think we ought to chip in and buy one of the vacuums that woman from BC thought was a good idea. We could truck them all out to her place...... :p:p

Well I was amazed by the farmers out there. We pulled into a gas station about an hour before swift current. The lady asked where we were headed. I told her wherever the gophers were, we drove here from BC to shoot some gophers. She chuckled and said there was lots everywhere. When she realised we were serious she got right on the phone and called her husband. She came back out and told us to wait 10 min and her husband would be here to take us to their farm. She said she had a big yard we could put our trailer in and a hose and power, and a bathroom in her barn with a shower we could use.

Well he took us to the farm, gave us his Quads, ammo and let us use his truck for the weekend so we didn't have to unhook ours. The wife even came out to see if we had any laundry needed done.

As far as the gophers, if you have never been to Sask don't read any further or you will think I am full of $h!t ! We (3 of us)probaby shot 4000 gophers from thurs nigh-sunday eve. They are crawling everywhere. I was having the time of my life. I'll be going back next year.

Do we need to go all the way to SK or is there good spots in AB?Also is there a better time of year?

I would think the farther south you go, the more gophers you will find. And yes, NOW is the time to go... the new ones are out and the grass isn't usually too long. The gophers are still out until late summer, but after a while the grass grows too long to make seeing them easy to do.
