Headspace gauges...

Hi all.

I am looking for a set of headspace gauges (go, no-go, and field) for a 35 Whelen. Can anyone suggest a Canadian retailer?

I don't know of anyone in Canada stocking them...

No restrictions to buy them from the US though. Brownells usually have them in stock.

I doubt you need the field gauge... I normally only buy go gauges... and I chamber to a minimum spec. A go gauge with two pieces of scotch tape on the back of it becomes a no go gauge... Field gauges have no place in precision rifles, they are more for worn out military cartridges/rifles.
 
Same set of gauges will work for all of .25-06,.270 Win,.30-06 and .35 Whelan.The length to shoulder and shoulder angle is the same for all 4 cartrridges. Cross check @ Brownells and you will see an identical mfrs part # for all.

I am fitting a new barrel (1st time for me) is there any tips anyone would like to offer from their own experience?

I intend to build my own barrel vise and action wrench, I am not concerned about that part.

Take your time, measure several times and write it down on a sketch. After chambering and fitting the barrel you should be able to just feel the bolt close on the go gauge at the bottom of the bolt throw. The bolt needs to be stripped for the correct feel. Allow about 2 thou compression in your measurements for when the barrel is tightened.

I have made one or two headspace guages on the lathe (for my own use). Basically threaded two pieces of steel together and turned them into a cartridge with a seam in the middle of the body and then added a screw in the primer area which becomes a set screw to lock the fore part from turning. Their purpose is that you can unscrew the front half of the guage to create a no go guage in effect and can measure the seam in the middle with a feeler guage to estimate the headspace on an already chambered rifle
