Headspace guages

Can a section of rim be ground off of a headspace guage To avoid having to remove the extractor?

Talking of .308....if you buy the right ones the come with a groove for the extractor.

Heat from grinding could affect the guages.

Yes, or you can 'insert' the gauge onto the bolt face...

Clymer makes them that way. When I make one I also do that.

Thanks for the info guys. I think i'll be grinding off a section of rim of a forester guage. I think so long as I keep it cool & don't change the colour it wont hurt anything. Getting a new set from Brownells is not in the budget. If anyone has a pic of the base of a modified guage I would like to see it to check how much material is removed. Thanks again for all the info.
