anyone ever seen this on a #4 MK 1 before.?it is a ROF gun, dated 42

Sunray, That isn't really true, I'm not saying you're wrong for the most part, but I've seen several patern 14 and 17 rifles as well as Wesinghouse Mosins and No1 mk lll and no 4 Lee Enfields and mauser 98s, 95s, 91s, Ross rifles etc that were in VG to excellent condition, that were converted to DP status. Drill Purpose rifles can be anything from derelict junkers to brand new rifles that have the unfortunate happenstance of becomeing surplus to current and future needs. bearhunter

Seems plausible the folks at the factory just didn't want this one to find legs or get chucked into the next shipment out?

well, i think 1 of 2 things.
first, like Marks 36 harmon says, its not up to standards. rather than pay time to strip it. it gets used for gaurd duty.
or
it was done outside the government contract for the factory themselves. ment to stay in the plant for defence.things werent lookin to good in 42 in england. to me this would explane why its not numbered.
it is a guessing game at this point however, untill a fellow can find it in print somewhere

when I had my rifle like this it was very crudely finished (ie machined) the blueing was excellent as was the wood and it was DP. BUT i used to have quite a few guages from longbranch so I tried a few out to see if could find why it was rejected for front line service .I had a guage which was used to see if the receiver was twisted after breaching the barrel so I tried this one and to my surprise it wouldn't slide in like it should ,it was a very simple squareness guage which replaced the bolt it looked like square but had a tab on the bottom end which when the tool was inserted in the boltway this tab would also slide into the rear trigger guard mounting area if square the guage would slide right in if not it wouldn't .so I figured she got a bit of twist and it was down graded to DP then upgraded for factory defence when all other good rifles were needed elsewhere BTW mine was a Fazackery as well

Nothing to add but speculation that the rifle was out of spec but useable
perhaps Gov inspector rejected it but the factory decided it was good enough.
