Hearing Protection for Clays – What Actually Works (and What Have You Learned the Hard Way)?

3M TEP-200 electronic plugs, they can be found on US ebay for half the retail price.
Or EEP-100, twice cheaper, same NRR, but lower water/dust resistance rating.
Must ensure the foam seals fit properly (there are several sets included).
Double up with electronic muffs when shooting indoors.

Can you double up over these style of electronic (looks like they protrude a little / are not flush)?

There's good molded plugs and not so good molded plugs and I've had both. The ones I have now are great and I have to take one out if I'm to hear what people are saying but I had a pair a number of years ago that didn't work well at all, it's all in the fit.
Good foamies are hard to beat for blocking sound but I just don't find them comfortable after a while. Electronic muffs are good and sometimes I double up with molded plugs and muffs with the volume turned up high, then I can hear most conversations but still have vey good noise protection.

This is exactly what I do.

I have moulded (vented) plugs and then double up with Peltor over ear muffs. With this combo I can *just* about hear people talk and when shooting it is really quiet (gunfire sounds really soft).

I find it helps me shoot (can think better / flinch less).

I learned this lesson the hard way. Was doing a 3 Gun match and one part was in an awkward position that broke the seal on my muffs (no plugs), I emptied a magazine of 223 in that state. My ears rang for a week. Been doubled up ever since. Best move ever.
