So I'm only 29 and I already have nearly 70% hearing loss in my left ear, probly from the thousands of rounds I shoot hunting with no hearing protection in. I can't wear normal ear plugs or muffs because they just muffle everything and I find it messes with my calling.

does anyone know if you can get something to cancel out the shotgun noise but not interfere with anything else? I would preferably like moulded ones.
 
Electronic Muffs are what your after, they've been around for a long time. They will actually amplify ambient sounds if you turn them up then "cut out" anything over a certain dB. Unfortunately you've already ####ed your hearing for the rest of your life. Too bad you've not done your home work until its too late.

SRS Tactical has a nice selection. I just bought a pair of 3M Peltor Tactical 6-S with gel ear pads for about $130 if I recall correctly.
 
Costco has custom ones for 50$ with built in noise filters, or you can go with electronic ear muffs starting at around 70$ for a good pair.
I use Howard leight sport impacts, the only thing I don't like is the feedback it gets from high voltage power lines, and wifi and doppler radar.
 
Well I didn't realize how bad it was until I was in the doctors for something else and they threw a hearing test just for the hell of it
 
This season while hunting I brought my muffs along in the atv, and had I needed to shoot I would have put them on providing I had a second to do it.

I am running a pair of electronic muffs and they work really well. Glad to hear that you are doing something to protect your hearing. I am absolutely gob-smacked that none of your shooting buddies/range pals ever said a word to you. I don't even know other shooters at my range and I will bug them to put in their hear pro or lend them a set of plugs. It is one of the few things I actually will engage a complete stranger at the range about. They probably come on to CGN and rant about me but I am sure when their balls drop they will thank me later...
 
Even shooting outdoors it sometimes makes sense to use plugs & muffs depending on what you shoot .. I shoot muffs as a minimum and then plugs also if needed
 
On Saturday I was dry firing by just lifting the bolt and back down. I didn't have ears on, unknowingly I chambered a round and fired. I had the rifle pointed down range and aimed at my target, but my ears hurt for rest of the day, rang for 5-10 minutes straight. I'll be wearing muffs even when dry firing now.

Wut? Or maybe just be sure of the state of your weapon from now on? If you're planning on needing ear pro for negligent discharges, perhaps you should wear it all the time... or give up shooting?

Absolutely. Plugs alone can still allow sound waves to be conducted through bone in your skull and damage your hearing. Doubling up is an excellent plan.

No more so to get used to how they effect my cheekweld, I wont be taking them off between shots while in the field. At the range they stay on regardless.
 
How good are the electronic muffs dB wise? I can't use ear plugs so I need the most protection I can get from muffs without blowing the budget.
 
I use the Howard Leights Impact muffs, I'm not sure of the db rating, but they muffle the sound pretty good for most shooting. When using large calibers or guns with muzzle breaks it may be good to double plug or place a foam insert in the muff.
