What do you guys do for hearing protection, if anything? I have mild Tinnitus and shooting without hearing protection really aggrivates them, but I don't think I could hear my surroundings well enough with hearing protection. I mostly hunt grouse and deer. Any ideas?

Thick foam ear plugs always. My ears are super sensitive. Double protection with 7mm mag and M44's.

I want to buy some noise clipping hearing protection, but I have not seen anything that is quality for a reasonable price.

get some -even- cheap electronic hearing protection. got mine at harbour freight but I think princess auto has them too. better than nothing and will work great for hearing any bush noise. you can also look into Sonic defenders, ear plugs that allow low level noise thru but block loud sounds.
I suffer the same problem, and the 12guage a couple weeks ago caused some ringing. last weekend with the electronic ones on I was fine.

The Browning electronic muffs are pretty good, not much static and amplification is separate and adjustable for each ear. You will actually hear better, and they do cut out the muzzle blast with electronics. The Remington electronic muffs kinda suck, like most Remington stuff. Lots of static, mono sound not stereo, but the mounts for the wire harness are more durable than the Brownings. I also have the rubber covered "valve" type plugs. they allow most sounds to come through and do help reduce the blast of shooting a considerable amount. I hunted pheasants for four days this week wearing the valve plugs. No complaints.

Amazon.Ca has Howard Leight electronic muffs for $45 pre tax. Not a bad deal, go for the slowest shipping option and pay nothing for the shipping.

Have a pair of these and they are "Stereo" you can dial the sensitivity to the level you like and hear people around you very well but cuts off the BANG perfectly.

Has a mini jack input for you MP3 player for those times sitting in a blind alone for hours LOL

Check out the Surefire Sonic Defenders hearing protection. I have a pair and they are good at knocking down the sound but still allow you to hear. Reasonably priced too.

Thanks guys. Looks like I'll start looking for some electronic ear muffs. I just can't take the gun shots with no protection anymore and I'd still like to be able to hear grouse rustling. For now, basic plugs will have to do though.

Please take it from someone who now has to wear hearing aids due to auditory damage from gunshots.
Do yourself a big favor & protect your hearing. Once it is gone, that's it. Wearing hearing aids sucks & is far more expensive than starting with good ear protection.

I picked up a pair of Caldwell electronic low-profile muffs last time I was at Cabelas in Winnipeg. They were only $25 and do a very good job.

I bought them primarily for trap shooting. I found with plugs or muffs that I couldn't hear commands or other people talking very well. I wore the Caldwell ones and was very happy that I could hear range commands are clearly as if I wasn't wearing protection at all. And as soon as there was a report from a firearm, they cut-out and saved my ears. I wouldn't recommend these for use while hunting, as I still can't quite make out really "quiet" noises, such as foot falls from an animal.

I fired one shot from my 20ga yesterday, and realized, this is the last time. I have maybe fired 8 shots in my whole life without hearing protection. I hope this isnt enough to cause lasting damage. I will make sure to wear the hearing protection from now on.
